  • Estrada, Padilla, Johnson Non-Tendered...

I can't say Estrada came as a surprise to any of us. Someone must've seen something in Juan Padilla, though. They've changed the guy's mechanics three times now and he's still brittle as balsa wood. IMO, it's either roids or he's just one of those guys who starts physically breaking down early (likely the latter). Considering Johnson is gone, that literally means that we now have absolutely nothing to show for the Bell/Ring trade. And we coulda had Cla Meredith, dammit!

I wouldn't mind taking a look at Matt Wise, Kiko Calero, and Mark Hendrickson (long man)

I wonder how much Johnson's depature has to do with a certian list that is comming out today. There was a lot of talk when we first made that trade for him that he either had trouble adjusting to ML pitching or was a "steroids guy".

I'm sure that many of the names on the list have already been leaked out to the inner circles of baseball. That's why Segui came out and admited it, cause he knew he was on the list.

Moe...Calero has some kind of unknown arm damage. I wouldn't want to sign the guy as a set-up man and then have him go Ambiorix Burgos on us with some ridiculous injury. Hendrickson is an interesting case, especially because he struggles to repeat his delivery/is someone Rick Peterson would probably do wonders for. Wise would be an interesting guy, though.

Well, we signed Wise. Good move. Calero was re-signed by the A's. Now we just need to sign Hendrickson.

I'd love Hendrickson as a long guy, but it would make our bullpen a little lefty heavy (Scho, Little Pedro, Wags, and Hendrickson?). If we can get him on a Minor League deal, go for it. Rumor is that Padilla is going to be brought back on a Minor League deal, as well.

If we were to sign Hendrickson, we would look into trading Schoeneweis. Didn't the Rockies have some interest in him? Wasn't the deal Heilman and Schoenweis for Fuentes?

The Rockies probably wanted salary relief with them.

BTW moe, you should add [1a] Trade for Johan Santana

Deal was never reported correctly. They wanted Heilman and "a minor league pitcher" for Fuentes to start with, and then asked for Schoeneweis. Considering Fuentes is every bit the head case Heilman is (there is a reason the Rockies are trying to sell low on him...he doesn't like his new job as a set-up man to Manny Corpas), well...

"we would look into trading Schoeneweis."

Unless he was thrown into something AND we ate all the salary, he'd be worthless.

Considering we were able to unload Mota, I'm sure we could find someone to take Schoeneweis. I would try to sell him as a lefty specialist...

Not a bad idea, but the main reason we were able to sell Mota to the Brewers was because of his really good seasons in LA as a set-up man and his fastball speed. Schoeneweis is a good LOOGY, but the problem is twofold: 1) he doesn't have any one season that stands out, unlike Mota. Just one spectacular stretch run with Cincinnati. Also 2) he doesn't have a 95-97 mph fastball, unlike Mota. You can get teams to take flyers on guys with blazing fastballs when they otherwise wouldn't or guys who had one incredible season, but Schoeneweis lacks both. IMO, if he were used as a LOOGY this year, I think you could probably get a return on him as early as the trade deadline of '08, but not earlier.
