The Mets have already been turned down by a handful of targets in their search for a new baseball operations head. Each of Theo Epstein, Billy Beane, David Stearns, Matt Arnold, Scott Harris and Brandon Gomes had been raised as potential candidates only to later be ruled out of consideration. Cardinals general manager Michael Girsch can be added to that list, as Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that New York reached out to the Cards for permission to speak with him last week. Girsch, however, declined to pursue the opportunity, electing to remain in St. Louis instead.

Blue Jays ownership recently denied the Mets’ request to interview Toronto president/CEO Mark Shapiro as part of New York’s ongoing front office search, report Ken Davidoff, Joel Sherman and Mike Puma of the New York Post. Shapiro becomes the third known Mets’ target of the day to be ruled out as a possibility, joining Brewers GM Matt Arnold and Cardinals GM Michael Girsch.

Granted this is usually a popularity contest, but Lindor didn't even crack the top 20 in dWAR this year and missed almost 40 games.

Yesterday, we reported Alderson was making a round of requests to interview assistant GM-types for GM. Mets won't divulge names but so far we dug up Dodgers' Jeff Kingston (not leaving LA, per source) and Twins' Daniel Adler. There are more but this gives you an idea of the type.

                  • Tommy Tanous is interesting but doesn’t have name recognition. Which frankly half the people mentioned I was unfamiliar with.

Oh gee, another experiment with a nobody.

How did Calloway, Beltran, Rojas, Van Wagenen and Porter work out again?

Eh, everyone is a nobody until they're not. Under his direction they drafted McNeil, Conforto, Alonso, Gimenez, Peterson, Kelenic. And now Alvarez, Mauricio and Baty for the future hopefully.

You can get experience. Some would call them retreads.
You can get inexperience. Some would call them up and coming.

The Mets have always been good at drafting talent. Where they have failed is in having those players develop into stars within the organization as opposed to after they were traded to another team or allowed to walk for players like Kevin McReynolds, Jason bay and Bobby Bonilla. McReynolds was okay. What happened to Kevin Mitchell after he was traded away? How about Jeff Kent? More recently, how did Danny Murphy and Justin Turner do after they were dumped? There are many others. There are also a lot of next big things that amounted to nothing with this team.

Successful teams are good at evaluating and holding onto talent. Tampa Bay is the best examples of this. The Mets are one of the worst.

I've always viewed the McReynolds acquisition as the beginning of the end.
                            Put it in the books.

                                Tampa? Holding talent?
David Price, Evan Longoria, BJ Upton, James Shields, Blake Snell, Ben Zobrist, Chris Archer. What talent have they held?

And honestly there are so many fans that want to trade Dom Smith, Jeff McNeil, Nido, Peterson even Alonso and Nimmo. And before that group Rosario or Plawecki or d’Arnaud or Sewald or Flexen. There was the Wheeler should be traded group too.

**Murphy wasn’t dumped. He turned down the Qualifying Offer.
