  • Pedro caught in cockfight

Here's a link to an article on the todays NY Post

Geez ... Pedro ... why are you doing this?
I hope that this years road games will not be affected by this

It's legal and part of the culture there. While disturbing to see there's nothing illegal going on.

People raised here may be bothered by bullfights too, but they're very popular in some countries.

I think that this is not the point. The point is that in the United States, also in Europe, people doesn't like those things at all. And that's the reason why Pedro will becom unpopular

In parts of Europe bullfighting is extremly popular.

I find deer hunting to be repulsive, but I don't dislike players who hunt.

I don't LIKE what's happening there, but it is legal, so who am I to tell another country what's allowable within their borders.

          1) It's legal in the DR. I personally don't care one way or the other.
          2) Some Phillies fans and Braves fans will obviously pick up on the double entendre of the term "cockfight" and put Pedro through hell on his road starts, though I'm sure he can handle it.
          3) PETA is going to raise hell. You can be sure they'll make Pedro (and Juan Marichal) out to be Michael Vick.

In an era of cheating in baseball where the guys testing positive for steroids are the unpopular ones and guys like Pedro are lauded for being throwbacks to another era, I highly doubt it. Besides, Marichal publicized a while back that his hobby was cockfighting (read about it in a 2001 baseball trivia book) and it didn't kill his reputation.

Just look how PETA treated Vick (and I was whit PEAT here). And I think tey'll do the same with Pedro. The only thing thats speaks for Pedro in this case is that's not illegal in the DR.

BTW: Finally we've s.th. to talk about until spring training

I know VERY few people who take really anything PETA says seriously. Maybe it's different in Germany, but not here in the US.

                  OK, point there.
The only time the germans notices the NFL is on Super Bowl Sunday. But after PETA shows with the finger on Vick, a lot of guys took notice of that. So mayber you're right ... we germans are very pet-loving (and animal-loving) people

I personally believe that if Pedro pitches like he did a few years ago, nobody will care. I support PETA - I don't like cockfighting, dog racing, bull fighting dog fighting or any of these "sports" but I think that the general public will soon forget this if Pedro is Pedro once again. The PETA folks won't. Also, as bad as it seems... Vick and dog fighting hit much more of a nerve than chicken fighting...mans' best friend and all that.

Cockfighting is an awful "sport". One of those things that should be banned worldwide. However, this occurred in the DR where it is legal. Mets fans won't give a rat's patoot about it as long as Pedro pitches well.

The Michael Vick thing is different in that dog fighting is illegal in the U.S., is abhorrent by our cultural mores, and it had aggravated circumstances (the killing of non-competitive dogs). Had Vick been caught doing this in a country where it is legal to fight dogs he wouldn't have missed a snap.

I am a long stand member of the the original PETA. People Eating Tasty Animals.

I'm certainly not condoning what Pedro does....but to be fair......from what I have heard and been told by people. Places like KFC, which millions of americans eat every day, make chickens suffer MUCH worse than this.

Pedro was caught in a cockfight? What was he doing fighting a rooster?

I don't like any of those "sports" either but PETA masks their near-terrorist means with good intentions.
