why doesnt willie go with a 6 man rotation to preserve his starters

    1 johan santana

    2 john maine

    3 oliver perez

    4 pedro martinez

    5 el duque

    6 pelfry/sosa/armas jr/f garcia(if it panns out)

Not gonna happen. The only six-man rotations used were just before the playoffs to preserve the arms of Orlando Hernandez and Pedro Martinez. Both were temporary. Neither Willie Randolph nor Rick Peterson believes in a permanent six-man rotation. I actually have said this quite a few times and can source my comments, but to be fair the threads are a few pages back.

They overworked the pitchers back than compared to now.

A 6-man rotation makes no sense for the Mets, since that would cut down on the number of starts Johan Santana makes. The Mets should be trying to get him out there more often, not less, since he is the best pitcher in the game.

Granted, a 6-man rotation would help limit El Duque and Pedro, but I'd rather see them just give them a few weeks off in the middle of the season to rest them. You know they are going to need it.

Johan goes every 5th day, period. If they want to push other guys back in spots for extra rest, ok. Problem is, what are you going to do, have Pelfrey or Armas hanging around for the rare extra start?

And really, you should be maximizing your rotation strength not watering it down. Whatever 6th guy you bring in isn't as good as the other 5. (Or else he wouldn't be the 6th guy)

We're never gonna pay Santana that much then not let him pitch as much. The sixth starter, probably Pelfrey, I'm expecting to get a lot of games, whenever El Duque/Pedro breaks down.

What year(s) are you thinking of, bb44? Possibly five men at times, but I doubt six.

Agreed. a 6 man rotation gives everyone 27 starts. a 5 man rotation gives everyone 32-33 starts. Do you really want to take those 6 starts from Santana and give it to Pefry / Sosa / Armas / Garcia? I'd rather Maine and Perez make those extra 5-6 starts, too. Pedro is a tough one, because it is unclear how he'll respond from being out a year.

The Mets should stay with 5 men rotation. If at some point the pitchers tire or injure, they can put one of these extras into the rotation

Actually, the only references I can find to Stengel using a six-man rotation of starting pitchers was Spring Training of 1957. The idea was canned before the season began because the pitchers, especially Whitey Ford, thought it was a terrible idea. Incidentally, NOTHING worked for Stengel when it came to pitching. Look at the arms of all his home-grown pitchers and except for Ford, you have a bunch of guys who worked until their arms fell off (i.e. Luis Arroyo, Floyd Speer) or much more often had their mechanics FUBAR'ed to the umpteenth degree after experiencing success (Gene Bearden, Johnny Kucks, Bob Turley, Tom Sturdivant, Grover Powell, Craig Anderson).

It's a bad idea simply because our better pitchers would pitch less.
