Pitcher Oliver Perez won his salary arbitration case against the New York Mets on Friday and will be paid $6.5 million this year rather than the team's offer of $4,725,000.

They should have just given him the $6.5M to avoid arbitration.

Yeah, why not spend money just because when you don't have to? That makes so much sense.

If Perez puts a second straight good year up I hope the Mets tie him up long term though. If Perez ever added consistency to his list of positive attributes he'd be a monster.

Agreed. However, I have a strong feeling the Mets wind up resigning him. Why? Because he's so totally and completely dependent on Rick Peterson asking whether or not he did X, Y, and Z right. Peterson knows it, Minaya knows it, and Perez knows it. If he puts up another good season (which wouldn't surprise me), my guess is that the Mets lock him up long term and use his dependence on Peterson as leverage.

This franchise can afford to give him an extra $2.5M. Just the Mets being cheap as usual.

I kind of doubt Perez will re-sign. I see him becoming a FA then signing a ridiculous contract with another team.
