  • Roberto Clemente

Before any mods see this and move it to the Pirates forum, please read it.

I have heard from a person (though not very reliable) that Roberto Clemente was drafted by the Mets, than traded to Pittsburgh. Any truth in this?

That would have been a real neat trick, considering he started playing for the Pirates in 1955.

      Haha.

He was signed by the Dodgers, then drafted by the Pirates in the Rule 5 draft.

"He was signed by the Dodgers, then drafted by the Pirates in the Rule 5 draft."

Thus making him probably the best Rule V acquisition of all time.

On a side note, Clemente's 3000th and last hit...a double...came against then-rookie Mets starter Jon Matlack in 1972.

          That I knew.

          That I didn't know.

If that were true, it would rank above the Nolan Ryan/Fregosi and Amos Otis/Joe Foy trade.

Clemente is on the 1960 Pirate Championship team.

              Tricky. But I don't think that's true.
