  • schoe and sosa on their way out ??

VERO BEACH, Fla. - Mets GM Omar Minaya has let teams know that relievers Scott Schoeneweis and Jorge Sosa can be obtained in trades, according to sources briefed on the players' availability. Schoeneweis has two years and $7.2 million left on his original three-year deal. Sosa will earn $2 million in his final year before free agency.

Maybe they can use those guys as the basis to find field a right handed outfielder.

I guess this means they like some of the young relievers.

To me it means that Pelfrey will be the 5th starter and El Duque will be the long reliever.

They like Nelson Figueroa, Steve Register, Juan Padilla, and Willie Collazo. Also to a lesser degree Ricky Rincon. If they shop Sosa and Scho, any two of these guys could be competing to make the bullpen.

Even though his chances of making the team are infintestimally (sp?) small, Jason Vargas had a good outing today. He could have an impact this year, especially after having the bone spur taken out of his elbow last October.

I saw Figgy pitch one inning, and he had this one sinker he threw to the top of the strike zone that just froze the hitter. Yeah, I know it's not supposed to be that high, but I think that the hitter thought it wouls be a fastball high. He'd be a nice addition to the pen, and as a guy who grew up in NYC.

I think Vargas goes to N'awlins, myself.

If both are on their way out of town and we could use Nady, why don't sent them to the Pirates for Nady!?

Because the other team has to agree to the deal and why would the Pirates, of all teams, want 2 overpriced relievers?

You can't count on anything for sure, I guess.

Nelson Figueroa hasn't been in the majors since 2004 -- are we really going to trade Sosa to make room for him?

I wouldn't call Sosa overpriced, but Schoeneweis certainly is.

To make room for Figueroa? Maybe. Who knows. Look at Darren Oliver, who had officially retired. But we don't know. But to make room for *a* right-handed reliever with upside (Register, Padilla w/new mechanics and a better breaking ball, Smith)? Well, I wouldn't count that out...
