  • Mets ban smoking in stadium, Bobby Cox says "no way!"

I was reading yesterday's Washington Times sports section and it had an article saying that the Mets banned all smoking in the stadium last month. Supposedly Brave's skipper Bobby Cox smokes a cigar during his post game interview. The Mets caught wind of this (the Braves will be in town this weekend) and said "we will talk to him about it". Cox's reaction?
"I'm still going to light up."

I don't have a direct link as "proof" of this story as I read it in the paper. Anyone else hear of this ruckus?

I think Gary Cohen and Ron Darling mentioned that on the broadcast today.
"They put me in the Hall of Fame? They must really be scraping the bottom of the barrel!"
-Eppa Rixey, upon learning of his induction to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Motafy (MO-ta-fy) vt. -fied, -fying 1. For a pitcher to melt down in a big game situation; to become like Guillermo Mota. 2. The transformation of a good pitcher into one of Guillermo Mota's caliber.

Well, if smoking is for bidden it's also forbidden for Mr. Cox. If he still does it, we should ban him from stadium. As simple as that

BTW, did I ever said that I hate smoking and smokers
      sorry for some grammar mistakes

I like that attitude, good for him.

The Mets really don't need to make a big deal about Cox lighting up. He's an older guy, from a generation thats moving out of the game in droves. In a couple of more years the idea of people firing up a stogie in the clubhouse will seem as foreign as the days when Earl Weaver & Hank Aaron smoked in the dugout.

Well, if it's a rule, it's a rule. It doesn't matter who you are it still should apply to everyone.

What about when Santana fires up after his no hitter this year ? Or Willie after the trophy is hoisted this fall ?

I don't think they need to make a big deal about it.

Here are a couple of links to the story:

              Baseball Think Factory

              AOL sports

Reading this article, I originally agreed with FreshPrince - if fans can't do it, and it is against the law (which is is in NYC), then Cox shouldn't be allowed to do it.

But Whoisonit raises a fantastic point. If the Mets win the East (or more), I am sure there will be cigars in the clubhouse. And it would be hypocritical to ban them from Cox but not from their own players. Let him smoke it, it really isn't a big deal

Unless Chipper fires one up. The Mets need to seek any excuse, plausible or not, to keep him away from Shea.

Let Bobby Cox smoke himself into a grave.

This is some funny stuff here...lol. First I have heard about it.

I doubt Cox will make a big scene out of it though.

                      Agreed.
As long as he's got his hooch and a broad to smack around, he's cool with it.

Wow, that was below the belt.

He will be a first ballot Hall of Famer though...probably inducted at the same time Mr. Valentine will be...in Japan...lol.

Looking forward to a good series with you guys this weekend. We need to try and slow you down...going to be tough though. You are loaded this year.

I think the world of Bobby Cox. I reckon we won't be seeing the likes of him ever again. These days a manager has to be a squeecky clean corporate type, not a humanly flawed, rough around the edges, baseball character. Enjoy him while you can.

We hope you can slow us down too. Slow down the free fall we're in ! lol ! We really want them to punish Glavine, but looks like we'll have to wait a while for that guilty pleasure. Hopefully Textiera doesn't do another Larry impersonation on us.
It should be a good series.
                          If you loose.

"I'm still going to light up."

He's actually referring to what the Braves will do to the Mets this weekend
"I'm happy for [Edwin Encarnacion] because this guy bleeds internally, big-time" -Dusty Baker

"If on-base percentage is so important, then why don't they put it on the scoreboard?" -Jeff Francoeur

"At the end of the day, the sun comes up and I still have a job" -Joba Chamberlain
