Pedro to put control, toe to the test

It is rather amazing how quickly Pedro Martinez's toe has become a non-issue -- a non-issue of tissue. He seems fine. Not that he would tell the world if the problematic large toe on his right foot -- his push-off foot -- ached.
But the special, modified shoes have worked. And so has he.

His second start -- Wednesday in Washington, D.C. -- has little to do with his foot, but rather his intent and how the Nationals will react to whatever he does.

One person on the field before the game Tuesday wondered about all of that hit-by-pitch stuff, and wondered aloud.

"What would happen if they hit Pedro ... in the toe?"

    Pitching matchup

NYM: RHP Pedro Martinez (1-0, 6.00 ERA)
Martinez has made 13 starts and compiled a 4-2 record against the Expos/Nationals franchise that he pitched with for most of four seasons. Jose Guillen has a .406 average in 32 at-bats against him.

    VS

WSH: RHP Tony Armas, Jr. (0-1, 3.60 ERA)
Armas has a 5-3 record in eight career starts against the Mets. Other than Cliff Floyd, no Met has more than nine career at-bats against him.

    Player to watch
Cliff Floyd showed signs of heating up on Tuesday, and he likes to face Armas. He has nine hits, including two doubles, and five walks in 26 career plate appearances against the Nationals' starter.
