Mets to "acknowledge" Chipper Jones' career

WFAN producer Al Dukes talked to a Mets official this morning who told him the team intends to honor the retirement of Braves OF Chipper Jones, according to this report on WFAN.com.

"It was a conversation that went like this," Dukes explained on air, "'Will we acknowledge Chipper Jones' career? Yes we will.'"

And the Mets need to honor Jose Reyes with a tribute video on April 24th - that would be *real* class.

I have no problem with it at all. Yes it WAS a huge rival, and Met killer, but at the end of the day it's baseball not a nuclear holocaust. Chipper Jones gave every Met player and fan what is needed in sports---- The Worthy Opponent. Without that there is no rivalry. Chipper has always been a class act. Finally the Mets are doing something I agree with

Brooklyn Dodger fans never booed Stan Musial. Nowadays, too many fans listen to the idiots on FAN and decide they need to 'hate' players on other teams.

I think Ron and Keith were talking about Chipper being a Hall of famer, and they showed that he is in very select company having 450 hrs and batting .300 all with the same team. I think the only others were Musial, Ted Williams, Lou Gehrig, and Mel Ott. (just looked it up to confirm)

It would be a classy move on behalf of the team and fans. The man earned it. I'll certainly be there to send him off.

If the six or seven fans who attend games want to stand and clap for Larry, go ahead. But I don't believe the club needs to do it.

It also strikes me funny to take the line that Larry gave the Mets a "worthy opponent." The Mets franchise has struggled so much for success that I view just about every opponent as worthy.

Anyway, I just don't see the need to do this. Are we going to start honoring all our worthy opponents? If so, there won't be any dates open for the big give aways, such as Citibank Umbrella Day, or All State seat cushion Day, or Dave Schneck Bobble Head Day -- that might actually get me to the stadium.

Besides, do we know why the Mets never honored Gary Carter while he was still alive? Was he or his family against it?

Well there shouldnt be a parade down 5th avenue but an acknowledgement is not out of order at all. I think Chipper Jones is the type of player that baseball needs more of. First of all he was a great player, and he played the game the right way. It just so happens he was a Brave and kicked the Mets ass.

I think when a HOF player is in his last year he should get acknowledgement in every stadium. It doesnt have to be planned by the opposing team but a tip of the cap on a great career is in order.

I hope I never get to the point where I cant recognize and appreciate a great player because he is wearing the "wrong" uniform. Oh wait I did do that --- in 1976 when I was 12.
