  • R.A. Dickey

Mets Knuckleballer R.A. Dickey just threw a one-hitter in Tampa Bay to improve his record to 10-1. He gave up a weak infield single to B.J. Upton in the first inning, and that's the only hit the Rays got. Dickey struck out 12, walked nobody, and extended his scoreless innings streak to a Mets record 32 2/3 innings. That streak ended in the ninth, thanks to a David Wright error and two passed balls. In Dickey's last six starts, he has 58 strikeouts and four walks.

Who wants to be the one to tell him that pitchers don't win games?
They call me Mr. Baseball. Not because of my love for the game; because of all the stitches in my head.

Right, and who wants to tell him he's not as dominant a knuckleballer as they've ever seen. I seem to recall not too long ago someone here at BBF saying he wasn't that good. I'm glad I chimed in at the time.

Btw, that was a pretty cheap "hit" in the first that could've easily been scored an error on Wright. Hence, 25 outs later, the Mets' 36th one-hitter. But, oh well. T'was a great performance, and these past three seasons have been an extraordinary span of time for a guy who struggled for years with mediocrity before finding (and mastering) that knuckler. Great for him, especially since he's such a humble fella who takes nothing for granted.
    Put it in the books.

I would think he's the front runner for the Cy Young award right now.

He is #1, according to ESPN's Cy Predictor.

I would hope there are kids all over the country noticing this and starting the years and years of practice it takes to throw the pitch. As a pure KB lover, I'm SOOOO glad R.A. is out there doing this. He's the only one left. With this mastery though, hopefully he won't be the last and more teams will give KB'ers a solid look!

Animated GIF from Rob Neyer. The batter was B.J. Upton.

The Mets have the best, smartest fans in baseball.

Dave Sheinin has referred to him as The Most Interesting Man in Baseball (perhaps a reference to the guy from those Dos Equis commercials). Stats aside, if you read up on him you may find that he could very well be.

That strikeout to walk ratio is even more insane than the ERA which is pretty outlandish.

To add to that graphic, in Dickey's last six starts, he's walked 4 and struckout 58. Simply off the charts!

Too bad that stupid David Wright couldn't even handle a routine bouncer to 3rd.

I haven't actually read his book, but the review I saw indicated that this guy went through hell growing up. I can't help but root for a guy who made it through abuse to succeed.
