  • Kelly Shoppach

I always thought he was a good underrated hitting catcher. I know the Mets are committed to Thole, but I would start Shoppach everyday. He has plus power. A very good pickup IMO.

He hits 20 homers a year based on a 162 game average. Thats better than 90% of the catchers in baseball.

In addition, he also strikes out 176 times per 162 games as well, too.

I agree with The Amazing Met that the Mets getting Kelly Shoppach is a very good pickup.Shoppach is a right handed
hitting catcher who the Mets say is going to platoon with Josh Thole. He has 31 home runs in 492 career at bats with a
.530 slugging percentage against lefthanded pitching. And considering the Mets plan on using Shoppach for the most part
against lefties and Thole against righties those stats are very good production. Most major league players would give
anything to hit 31 home runs in 492 at bats with a .530 slugging percentage in a season.Besides,Shoppach is like Johnny
Bench compared to Johnson and Nickeas.Jeez,a mannequin can hit better than Nickeas.I think Shoppach would do very
well against lefthanded pitching for the Mets and that's who he's mostly going to face.Like The Amazing Met said a very
          good pickup IMO.

So does Duda, and Davis, and other players fans are enamoured with. Catcher is a power deviod position. I'll take 20 homers from Shoppach over 1 homer and 30 RBi from Thole.

Yes, and Duda is now in the minors for a reason, while Davis has been heavily criticized all season.

Well that makes him better than the minor league roster that we watched this year.

I have to agree with Amazing here. Shoppach is not like getting Johnny Bench but cmon I am so sick of watching Thole. Its very difficult to complain about Shoppach and not consider him an upgrade when Met catchers are hitting in the .230's with 2 homers and 35 rbi's. Its freaking the middle of August...35 rbi's?

I didnt realize how bad this was until I just checked Fangraphs. They are consistent because along with the 35 rbi's they also have 31 runs scored.

Update - Kelly Shoppach scored 2 runs tonight. He has already scored 1/16th of all the runs that the Mets catchers have score this year...in one game.

I'm not saying Shoppach is bad, I'm saying that anyone who thinks he's a marked improvement is erroneous in his judgement.

Would you like to bring back Mike Nickeas?
The Mets have the best, smartest fans in baseball.

No. Like I said, Shoppach isn't "bad", he's just not what the Mets need to be "good".

He's the equivalent of putting a cork in a 15x15 foot hole in a dam.

"The Mets sent Pedro Beato to complete the Shoppach trade." Cowtipper you put that in the season thread. I think it belongs here. Even though Shoppach is a massive upgrade offensively in that he can do one thing well if he is just a two month rental in a sub .500 season I have to ask why. Did Beato fall that badly or is he injured and thus merits writing off at 25 (or younger)?
