Watched a great show about the 1973 Mets yesterday.

I was in Appleebees with my girlfriend yesterday and this show about the 1973 Mets was on. Needless to say I was watching.

I was 9 in 1973 when they won the NL. It reminded me of how great it was when you were ignorant to the business that surrounded the game. I had no idea who the GM was, nor did I care. I didnt know who the owner was, nor did I care. You just wanted to watch them play and win. Nothing else mattered.

Watching Boswell, Garret, Harrelson, Milner, Staub, Grote, Seaver, Koosman, Matlack, and of course Tug really takes you back. It was a lot of fun to watch.

That was a surprising year for the Mets. It still baffles me how close they came to winning.

Our friend Joe and I watched that same "Mets Yeabook," Pauly, and, being the same age, I can definitely relate with your reminiscent post. That innocence was such great thing. It's such a shame it's goes away with age.

Just as surprising is how mediocre their overall season was. I mean, that team that beat the Reds in the LCS and took those dominant A's to a 7th game finished the season in first place with an 82-79 record. It's the worst record for a first place team ever. In fact, the Mets finished 1½ games ahead of the Cubs in 1973. When the second game of the doubleheader with the Cubs was rained out, no one argued to reschedule the final game of the year since the Mets had just clinched the division in the first game. Had it not rained and had the Mets lost the second game, they still would've finished first, 82-80, a half game up on the Cubs. A far cry from, say, the Orioles winning 100 games in 1980 while losing their division to the Yankees, who won 103 (but were swept by the 97-win Royals in that LCS). lol

As Keith Hernandez sometimes says on Met telecasts, "It's a funny game."

a few fleeting moments you felt that innocence.Like another friend of mine once said that sports is for the moment.

I'm happy to hear that your viewing at dinner was better than ours.Milladrive and I had dinner at a diner and the Jet game
was on.Thank God it's preseason.

It really is a shame it fades with age.

In this day of instant everything I sometimes think we know too much. Personally I dont think its any of our business what people make as a salary. Now its on the headlines, and its the first thing mentioned after the players name.

I have always gotten a charge out of baseball, and always will (not necessarily the Mets), but man o man who ever said ignorance is bliss must have been a baseball fan.

I still think the 73 season was a bigger collapse for the Cubs than 1969 was.
