You think things are bad now.To share a memory just for fun it was actually 19
years ago yesterday as I didn't get a chance to post it until today that the Mets got their 50th win before their 100th loss. This was the mother of all low
expectations rooting on general principle for the Mets to get their 50th win before their 100th loss.Just to see in the standings that 100th loss before their
50th win on general principle it just can't happen. This 1993 season for the Mets to say the least was a nightmare.
Well the Mets managed to get their 50th win before their 100th loss in dramatic 1986 Mets Game 6 WS fashion in a true David against Goliath
triumph. The heroes for the Mets in this game were names like Jeff McKnight,
who got two big hits in the ninth and tenth innings,Ced Landrum, who scored
the tying run and it was one of only two runs he ever scored with the Mets,
Darrin Jackson,Tito Navarro, who got the game winning RBI single, and it was
the only hit and RBI he ever got in his major league career in 17 at bats, and
Mauro Gozzo who got the save and it was the only save in his major league
career. And they did it against Greg Maddux and three relievers. And Gozzo got
his only major league save by protecting a one-run lead and getting a 1-2-3
inning by retiring Ron Gant,Fred McGriff, and David Justice no less.
The Mets beat the Braves 3-2 in 10 innings at Atlanta in this game. And as I
said they did it in dramatic fashion to say the least. The Braves were leading
the Mets 2-0 with no on and two outs in the top of the ninth and Greg Maddux
pitching. The Mets next two hitters were Jeff McKnight and Ced Landrum. The
Braves were 95-53 at this point and trying to win the division title at a time when wild cards weren't an option yet so they weren't going to fool around in
this game.Despite the Braves losing this game the Braves did win the division
title going 104-58 beating the Giants by one game as the Giants were 103-59.
Imagine winning 103 games without making the playoffs. The Mets were 49-98
at this point and were one out away against Greg Maddux down by two runs with nobody on base and were about to go to 49-99.And the Mets next game
was at Atlanta as Tom Glavine who was 19-5 at that point going for the Braves
against Pete Schourek who was 3-11 at that point going for the Mets.So the
possibility of the Mets going 49-100 at that point was looking really good.
I would of loved to go to Vegas with the odds of the Mets winning down by 2
runs with no on and two out in the top of the ninth at Atlanta against Greg
Maddux in 1993 with Jeff McKnight and Ced Landrum coming up.We could retire
for life.
So in the top of the ninth with Greg Maddux pitching up 2-0 with no on and
two outs here's what happens.Jeff McKnight singles.Ced Landrum singles
moving McKnight to third.Ryan Thompson walks to load the bases.Greg
McMichael replaces Maddux.Todd Hundley gets an infield hit to score McKnight
making the score 2-1.Dave Gallagher gets an infield hit to score Landrum tying
the score at 2-2.Joe Orsulak lines out to the pitcher to end the inning.
So in the top of the tenth with Mike Stanton pitching for the Braves he gets
the first two men out but then Darrin Jackson singles.Jeff McKnight singles
moving Jackson to second.Steve Bedrosian replaces Stanton.Tito Navarro
singles scoring Jackson giving the Mets a 3-2 lead. And as I said it was Tito
Navarro's only hit and RBI in his career in 17 at bats.Ryan Thompson strikes
out to end the inning and the Mets up 3-2.
So in the bottom of the tenth Mauro Gozzo comes in to pitch for the Mets and
gets Ron Gant to pop out to short. Then he strikes out Fred McGriff. Then he
gets David Justice to fly out to deep center. The Mets win 3-2 in 10 innings at
Atlanta in dramatic 1986 Mets Game 6 WS fashion down by two runs with no
on and two outs and down to your last out in a true David against Goliath
triumph. And the Mets get their 50th win before their 100th loss as the Mets
are 50-98 at this point. And the Mets needed to win this game to get their
50th win before their 100th loss because sure enough the Mets lost their
next game at Atlanta by a score of 11-2 with Tom Glavine beating Pete Schourek. And then the Mets lost their next game at Pittsburgh by a score of
6-2 so the Mets are 50-100 at this point. The Mets did manage to go 9-3 in
their last 12 games to finish the season at 59-103 the exact opposite of the
Giants record that year of 103-59 who didn't make the playoffs despite that
record as the Braves won the division title with a 104-58 record when wild cards weren't an option yet.
A little trivial tidbit that Tito Navarro scored the only run of his career in the
last game of this season at Florida as a pinch runner as he pinch ran for a
runner on third base with no outs in the top of the ninth. The Mets were up
4-2 in the top of the ninth when Ryan Thompson leads off with a double.
Dwight Gooden pinch hits for Pete Schourek and triples to right field scoring
Thompson giving the Mets a 5-2 lead.Navarro pinch runs for Gooden at third
base.Joe Orsulak singles scoring Navarro giving the Mets a 6-2 lead. The Mets
would eventually win this game 9-2.Pete Schourek got the win in this game
giving him a 5-12 record winning his last two decisions after losing to Tom
Glavine at Atlanta 11-2.
