  • Our Mets Hall of Fame - election 60

This is the sixtieth election for Our Mets Hall of Fame. Last time, we elected nobody.

    Rules

For the original rules and specifications for this Hall of Fame, see:

    New, additional rules:

    1) When voting, consider the player’s Mets career only. If you choose to vote “none of the above,” you must explain your decision or your vote will not count.

    2) It is not necessary that you explain your other votes, however it is still encouraged that you do so.

    3) I feel forced to note that the Veteran's Committee is a VALID election process, as a player IS eligible past 15 elections, if they meet certain criteria.

    4) If you vote in a manner deemed suspect and three or more other voters ask you to explain your vote, and you do not, your vote will be disqualified.

    5) For elections to end outright, a series of three straight elections in which no one is elected must occur. This rule is flexible and can be altered if the voters see fit.

    6) Voters must limit their ballot to fifteen players.

Another season is over and you know what that means - it's time for another round of Our Mets Hall of Fame voting. Yay!

I'm voting for RA Dickey - his was a Mets year for the ages, on a pitching-heavy franchise.
Cleon Jones catches a deep fly ball in F. Scott Fitzgerald's Valley of the Ashes, and a second-grader smiles in front of the black and white television.

Whoops I missed Dickey's name and went none of the above because a quick glance revealed guys that sucked or had too brief a run of good. In retrospect I see other pitchers with great seasons like Viola and Saberhagen are not in so no Dickey is not such a faux pas, even if he had two solid years before this one.

I voted for my favorite player "none of the above". Wow what a list. No wonder the Mets havent made the playoffs in 6 years.

Sorry but HOF - Met or otherwise - you need to do it longer than Dickey has.

Though I think RA has the makings of a Hall of Famer, he needs one or two more good seasons with the Mets to be elected to OMHOF. He's only been with the team for three seasons and he doesn't even have 40 wins with them, making him a little like Frank Viola (though, granted, Dickey's three years with the Mets have been more dominant than Viola's tenure with the team). I went with none of the above as well.

Other players that are working their way towards solid Mets careers are Ike Davis and Jon Niese.

Maybe a better name for this poll, then, is "Who *could* be in our Mets Hall of Fame?"

Heh, maybe. With these recent elections, there seems to be a bunch of people with "Hall of Fame" talent, but they rarely actually do enough to make the cut. We haven't picked anyone since the 51st election, when Tom Glavine earned induction after 10 'years' on the ballot.

I also voted none of the above as I also feel you need to do it longer than Dickey has.

It's a pity I got here a bit late to explain myself.

I think both Davis and Dickey have earned their way into the Mets' annals. Especially Dickey, who, if he does what he did for 2012 alone, deserves Our Met HoF recognition. Every 20-game winner the Mets have ever had are already inducted, and certainly being a CYA candidate is worth extra credit. I think he belongs, even if based solely on this season.
                    Put it in the books.

I agree on Dickey - if you look at previous elections, Dickey certainly qualified easily as a great BBF Met.

Almost - Viola did not earn enough support to be inducted.

Dickey's right on the cusp for me. Give me 10 wins next year and I'll give him my vote.

On the other hand, Davis needs a few more good seasons. The Mets have had a few batters with 30 home run seasons to not earn induction. Bernard Gilkey, Mike Cameron,Frank Thomas and of course Davis himself are on that list. At this point, Davis = Gilkey, as their Mets stats are surprisingly similar.

Here are their stat lines compared. Davis is on top, Gilkey on bottom:

                        Code:
G	PA	AB	R	H	2B	3B	HR	RBI	SB	CS	BB	SO	BA	OBP	SLG	OPS	OPS+

                        339	1334	1171	159	295	67	2	58	186	3	4	150	310	.252	.336	.461	.797	117	540
                        380	1567	1353	226	370	90	4	52	223	29	21	175	302	.273	.357	.461	.818	117	624
I'd go so far as to say Gilkey was slightly better than Davis, and he didn't really sniff this Hall of Fame. I think Davis needs at least two more good seasons.

I didn't realize that about Viola. Seems a crime. Has he been a part of a VC ballot yet?

As for Davis v. Gilkey, I hear you and understand your point. At the same time, though, Davis is homegrown. I'm also somewhat surprised Thomas hasn't been honored, if only for his nostagic prowess as the Mets' first-season heavy hitter.

But perhaps you're right about Davis, as of now. At very least, my vote will hopefully keep him over the obligatory 5% line.

...Which brings me to my next query: What if someone like Nieuwenhuis or Harvey (for two examples) don't meet the 5%, get dropped from the ballot, then become worthy considerations up the road?
                          Put it in the books.

Great minds think alike I got that covered in the "Returnees" section above.

Well, Dickey received 55% of the vote and everyone else falls off the ballot, save for Davis. Unless anyone objects, I'm not going to run another player election this go around.
