  • Jason Bay is leaving the Mets

From a New York Mets press release:

Jason Bay and the New York Mets today announced a negotiated early expiration of his contract. The agreement provides Bay his unconditional free agency while the Mets gain roster flexibility. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

“Jason is a great teammate, hard worker, stand-up guy, and true gentleman,” said Mets Chief Operating Officer Jeff Wilpon. “Like Jason, we had planned for the kind of production here that he enjoyed in Boston and Pittsburgh, where he established himself as one of the game’s top players. We wish Jason and his family success and happiness in the future.”

“Jason has a tremendous work ethic. There was never any question about it,” said Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson. “Unfortunately, the results weren’t there and we are in a results-oriented business. We thank Jason for his efforts and wish him well.”

"I still feel I have plenty to give to this game and that I can play baseball at a high level. But after serious consideration, both sides agree that we would benefit from a fresh start," said Bay. "I'm grateful we were able to reach an agreement to allow that to happen. I’m excited to keep playing and have no intention of just walking away. I enjoyed my time in New York. I have no regrets in signing with the Mets, other than that I wasn’t able to play to the level that the team, the fans and I all expected and that we weren’t able to win more games. I move on with nothing but an appreciation for the organization and its fans and best wishes to all my teammates there."

“As I’ve previously said, there’s not a player who tried harder to succeed or was more frustrated and disappointed than Jason himself,” said Mets Manager Terry Collins. “I’ll miss Jason’s presence in the clubhouse as a player, teammate, and person.”

Bay was signed as a free agent by the Mets on January 5, 2010 to a four-year contract with a vesting option for a fifth year.

None - he gets it all, but perhaps some over time.

This is not that big a deal. He was not really in their plans for 2013 and doesn't really change next year's product very much.

We don't know, because "terms of the agreement were not disclosed". It seems that it was more important to Bay to get a fresh start on his career than it was to get every last dollar out of his contract, and the Mets' front office knew that they could not possibly get a decent return on their investment in him. This looks like a win for both sides.

Matters not to me. It was a lot of money, yet less than the Mets would've paid him had they held on to him. I'm more than elated they reached this agreement. Jason can move on to other places -- watch him hit .300/30/100 for his next team, heh -- and the Mets are one step closer to ridding themselves of overpriced underperformers.

Bay wasn't a bad deal when it was made. No one knew he'd put on a Mets uniform and turn scrub. ...despite the fact that the Mets have had way more than their share of stars join the team only to not live up to expectations. Arguably more than any other team is baseball history.

Anyway, I'm glad he and the Mets were capable of an amicably early parting of the ways.

          Now.... Where's Hairston?
          Put it in the books.

The most consistent rumor about Bay with the Mets in 2013 was that he would be in a platoon in left field. This is a pretty significant change, and it might give the GM a little more payroll flexibility for next year.

You want Alderson to blow money on washed up players past their prime?
The Mets have the best, smartest fans in baseball.

It may not change the product, but it certainly frees up some money.

None. Were you a fly on the wall at the negotiations?

Maybe he was: Jon Heyman of CBS Sports says Bay will receive his full salary as part of the agreement.

No way he should've gotten the full value of his contract. Alderson should've at least gotten Bay to let him keep the 2013 buyout.

Amazing. I hope that's not true. ...for two reasons. One, it means the Mets haven't saved any money on the deal, and, two, it only gives Straw more fuel for his Alderson fire. And, for some reason, the latter is more distubring than the former, heh.

More detail: Joel Sherman of the New York Post says the Mets will spread the remaining amount owed to Bay over the course of several years, and basically said in a separate tweet the Mets wouldn’t have agreed to this deal if it didn’t offer them flexibility to invest in the roster now.

I think he meant to have the ability to spend that kind of money... not spend it the WAY Minaya did. I have to agree with Giambi here.
