  • Our Mets Hall of Fame - Election 64

This is the sixty-fourth election for Our Mets Hall of Fame. Last time, we elected Jon Niese, as well as Terry Collins via the Managerial Election.

    Rules

For the original rules and specifications for this Hall of Fame, see:

    http://www.baseball-fever.com/showthread.php?t=83894

    New, additional rules:

    1) When voting, consider the player’s Mets career only. If you choose to vote “none of the above,” you must explain your decision or your vote will not count.

    2) It is not necessary that you explain your other votes, however it is still encouraged that you do so.

    3) I feel forced to note that the Veteran's Committee is a VALID election process, as a player IS eligible past 15 elections, if they meet certain criteria.

    4) If you vote in a manner deemed suspect and three or more other voters ask you to explain your vote, and you do not, your vote will be disqualified.

    5) For elections to end outright, a series of three straight elections in which no one is elected must occur. This rule is flexible and can be altered if the voters see fit.

    6) Voters must limit their ballot to fifteen players.

There are many players who dropped off the ballot previously that played with the Mets in 2016. These players are returning to the ballot because this one season may have changed your opinion on them in terms of Hall of Fame worthiness. If they have already reached their 15th year of eligibility or have reached then dropped out of the Veteran's Committee, they can appear on no more than three ballots, including this one.

I probably should have waited until the end of the playoffs lest some postseason heroics occur that change folks' opinion, but we can tackle that as it comes.

    My votes:

Bartolo Colon - 40+ wins is my arbitrary cutoff for starting pitchers. Below that, a hurler doesn't generally get my consideration; above that, I start to give him credence. Colon has 44 wins* in just three years as a Met, with average campaigns of 15-11 with 196 innings, just 29 walks and 138 strikeouts. Last year, I lambasted Colon, saying he was a worse signing than his contract merited, but I've changed my opinion a bit. Coupled with his very good counting stats with the team, Colon has given Mets fans a ton of memories (his home run, his near lights-out performance in the playoffs last year) and has been the team's only consistent hurler these past three campaigns. And he started his run when he was 41.

*He ranks 21st in career Mets wins, between Johan Santana (46) and Al Jackson (43). Both Santana and Jackson are in OMHOF.

Lucas Duda - After a poor year from Duda, my vote is tenuous. But I gave him the nod last year and I'll do the same this year, since he only moved up in the categories that made me vote for him: home runs and RBI. Adding seven home runs to his ledger this year puts him at 108 in his Mets career. He moved past OMHOFer Carlos Delgado into 11th place on the team's career home run list and now sits behind Ed Kranepool (who has 118). Only 12 players in Mets history have hit 100 or more home runs. His RBI total now stands at 341. That's a bit less impressive, as he is 21st in team history in that category, but he still ranks between two OMHOFers, Mookie Wilson (342) and Delgado (339). He moved past John Milner and Delgado on the all-time list this year.

Jeurys Familia - This isn't your average Mets closer. The guy who sticks around a while, compiles a lot of saves but has a lot of unimpressive outings mixed in a la John Franco, or Armando Benitez. Familia is perhaps the Mets most lights-out game-ender since OMHOFer Billy Wagner. Sure, he's been their closer for just two seasons -- but he already has 100 saves with the club, making him just one of five Mets with that many. Three of the other four are in this Hall and the fifth is Armando Benitez. In just one year, he moved from #13 on the saves list to #5 -- and #6 is Tug McGraw, with 86 saves and another OMHOFer. And recall, as well, that last year Familia tied the Mets' single-season mark for saves. This year he broke it. And he is the only hurler in team history with a 50-save campaign. And, before he was a closer, he was a dominant set-up man for Jenrry Mejia in 2014.

They don't get my vote yet, but...

Curtis Granderson and Jacob deGrom are on my watch list for next year. Barring a Cy Young-quality 2017, Syndergaard is at least two years out. I have hope for Harvey, he may rebound. Cespedes needs a couple more years.

The pitchers that were on the watch list: Harvey and DeGrom are injured. Cabrera and Walker had Mets HOF seasons at their respective positions but it is only one season. Noah, Familia and Cespedes need at least another year. Lagares, Conforto and D'Arnaud have all regressed.

I started typing this thinking I would need to explain my none vote or why I would rather abstain than ruin the fun. However, I think Colon deserves it, at least in part for his personality. Between the Big Sexy, the Home run and hitting/baserunning in general, the flip play and the apparent mentorship in the clubhouse I think he can go into the Mets HOF.

      edit: Duda - no thanks

I would have voted for Harvey, Lagares and Granderson too. Not doing so was an oversight. If this can be corrected that'd be great. My nominees have all been significant cogs in a productive period in Mets baseball.

I voted Colon, Cespedes (the guy carried this team two years in a row), Familia, Granderson. Lagares needs another year. Syndergaard needs 1-2 more years as does DeGrom.
