On September 1, 1997, Labor Day, the Yankees visited Philadelphia for the first time since 1954. The defending World Champs came into Veterans Stadium with a record of 79-55, 6.5 games behind Baltimore in the AL East, but 4.5 games ahead of Seattle in the Wild Card. The Phillies were firmly entrenched as the worst team in baseball, sporting a 50-82 record. In a memorable game in an otherwise dreary year, Curt Schilling would strike out 16 Yankees in 8 innings pitched, including whiffing Derek Jeter 4 times. The Phillies won 5-1 and went on to sweep the Yanks in three games, effectively knocking them out of the AL East race.
