Brutal way to start the season. This loss is all on Gabe, simple as that. He was the one who yanked Nola with a 5-0 lead and gave the keys to the awful bullpen. Leave Nola in and the Phils win.

Agreed. Nola was still pitching effectively with a low pitch count.

I would have given Nola another inning or two if he was effective, but might have had a quick hook if he struggled at that point. The problem is the first switch failed immediately, and it went downhill from there.

March 30: The Phillies (1-1) got in the win column with a 5-4 victory over the Braves in Atlanta. Rhys Hoskins homered and Carlos Santana hit two sacrifice flies. His second SF produced the game winning run. New Phillie, Drew Hutchison pitched a scoreless 8th & 9th innings to get the win.

March 31: The Phils lose in embarrassing fashion, 15-2. The only bright spot was Scott Kingery collecting 2 hits, both doubles, in 4 AB. Kingery is 4 for 9 on the young season, hitting at a .444 clip.

The lowlight was Gabe Kapler managing to botch a pitching change in the third inning. With starter Vince Velasguez being hit around for 7 runs, Kapler finally strolled to the mound and signaled for Hoby Milner out of the pen. Only problem was Milner never got word from the dugout that he was supposed to be warming up and he hurriedly attempted to toss a few warmup pitches before entering the game. Braves manager Brian Snitker objected to Milner tossing warmup pitches in the pen as it was delaying the game. Eventually, Snitker was ejected. Crew chief umpire Jerry Layne stated after the game that he allowed Milner to throw the warmup pitches because 'he didn’t want Milner to get hurt." Layne criticized the Phillies by further stating that “Whoever is at fault for not doing their job on the Phillies side should have to answer to Major League Baseball.” Whether the pitching change fiasco was a communication breakdown between the dugout and the bullpen coach is irrelevant as this falls on Kapler. The Kapler hiring is looking like a disaster after 3 games as he is in way over his head. While I wasn't the biggest Mackamin fan, the Phillies would be wise to bring him back before the wheels fall off.

Also, the Phillies had to use a non-pitcher, Pedro Florimon to finish Saturday's game by pitching the bottom of the eighth.......Not a great start for "The Kapler Era".

April 2: The Phillies-Mets game is postponed due to snow. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on July 9. Meanwhile, Phillies fans will cheer a coach before their home opener on Thursday with Eagles coach Doug Pederson throwing out the first pitch.

April 3: The Mets shut out the Phillies in frigid Citifield, 2-0. Ben Lively pitches well in a losing effort, going 5.2 innings and allowing 6 hits, 2 runs and striking out 5. The Phillies bats were cold, only mustering 3 hits.

April 4: A 4-2 defeat sends the Phillies home with a 1-4 record. With a competent manager and a decent offense, the Phillies could be 3-2 or 4-1 right now. The opener in Atlanta and these two games against the mediocre Mets were winnable.

April 5: Even after a victory, the beleaguered Gabe Kapler cannot escape scrutiny. During the pregame introductions for the home opener against Miami, Kapler was booed by the Philly faithful. He was once again booed in the sixth inning when emerged from the dugout to pull starter Nick Pivetta and heard more of the boo birds when he returned to the dugout. After the game, Kapler had to answer questions about the booing. Now, Kapler has to contend with an anonymous Phillie who stated, "We'll be OK … We just need the manager to get out of the way."

As for the game, Maikel Franco knocked in 4 RBI with a three run homer and a triple. Pivetta struck out 9 Marlins over 5.2 innings. It all added up to a 5-0 Phillies victory.

April 8: RHP - Jake Thompson was the unlucky one to get demoted to AAA when Jake Arrieta was activated.

April 11: Phillies 4, Reds 3 (12) - Mike Kingery's sac fly in extras propels the Phillies to a sweep of Cincinnati. Number 9 hitter J.P. Crawford connected for his first major league homer. Nick Pivetta, who pitched well in a no decision, would have recorded the win if not for Hector Neris' blown save.
