April 13: Phillies 2-1 victory over Tampa Bay improves their record to 7-5. Having them play the Marlins, Reds and Rays in the early weeks of the schedule certainly has helped. How good will they be when facing stiffer competition? - remains the big question.

Yes, but that anonymous Phillie was absolutely correct.

April 20: Reliever Victor Arano has tied a franchise record with seven season-opening scoreless appearances It ties Scott Eyr e, who began the 2009 season with that number of scoreless relief appearances. There's more: Arano has retired all 25 men he has faced in 2018 and he has retired the last 32 batters he's faced in 2017 & 2018.

April 27: Ben Lively placed on the DL with a back strain. Jake Thompson recalled.
For Lively's next turn in the rotation the Phillies have at least three options:
Call up Enyel De Los Santos to make his major league debut. He has been sensational (1-0, 1.98 E..R.A) at AAA - Lehigh Valley.
              Recall Zach Elfin.
Use long man of the bullpen, Drew Hutchinson as a starter.

Injured jerad eickhoff is not thought to be ready yet to join the team.

Relief prospect Seranthony Dominguez has been promoted to AAA Lehigh Valley from AA - Reading.
(I always want to call him "Sir Anthony Hopkins Dominguez').

              Phillies Birthdays this weekend:

April 28: 1966 & 1967 Phillies outfielder, Jackie Brandt turns 84. (Brandt was an 11 year major leaguer 1956-1967 (except 1957: military service) who hit .298 and .297 in his two best seasons and made the 1961 American League all-star team as a Baltimore Oriole. He Came up to the major leagues on one of the last New York Giants teams and was an original San Francisco Giant, in that team's inaugural year on the West Coast of 1958.
April 29: Current Phillies 2B-3B, Scott Kingery turns 24..

1957 Phillies outfielder, Chuck Harmon turned 94 on April 23. Harmon was the third black player to play for the Phillies in their franchise history. He debuted with the team on May 17, 1957, less than one month after SS - Chico Fernandez (April 16) and 3B John Kennedy (April 22) broke the team's color barrier. Harmon played for four years in the majors. 1954 to 1957, mostly with the Reds and briefly with the Phillies and Cardinals. Prior to reaching the majors, he was a college basketball star, a Negro league player and a minor league star. Harmon's major league debut was with Cincinnati on April 17, 1954 less than a week before his 30th birthday. Harmon is listed by Wikipedia as the 2nd oldest living Phillie (behind wally Westlake, 97) and the 18th oldest living major leaguer.

April 28: Shortstop, J.P. Crawford injured his arm on a relay throw and will have an MRI today to determine if he should remain on the roster (day-to-day status) or be placed on the 10 day Disabled List. Jesmuel Valentin, now at AAA - Lehigh Valley would be Crawford's most likely replacement should the team need to place him on the DL. After making the throw Crawford reported a numbness in his arm and elbow..

Jesmuel Valentin made his MLB debut that same day, April 29.

Phillies minor leaguers most likely to reach the majors before September 1 (from what I hear and read).

                        outfielder - Roman Quinn.
starting pitcher - Enyel de los Santos.
                        relief pitcher - Seranthony Dominguez.
(All now at AAA - Lehigh Valley - International League).

Quinn has played in the major leagues with the Phillies before, briefly in September 2016. The others have no major league experience.

May 7: Reliever Seranthony Dominguez has been called up with Adam Morgan heading to the 10 day DL. The 23 year old Dominguez was signed in 2011 out of the Dominican Republic and was a starter up until this season. The Phillies brass see him as a potential set up man or closer in the future.

The Phillies now have zero lefthanded pitchers on their 13 man pitching staff. Three lefties have played for the Phillies so far this season, but Adam Morgan is now on the Disabled List and Hoby Milner has been demoted to as has Zac Curtis (latest roster move, with Jake Thompson returning to the Phils from AAA.
I still say that 13 men on a m,ajor league pitching staff is at least one too many and that the Phillies would be better off with an extra position player's bat off the bench.
At AA - Reading, 21-year-old lefty, Jo Jo Romer, who the Phils were so high on, is off to a 0-4 start with an earned run average over 6.00...

The second time around at AAA - Lehigh Valley has NOT been the charm for RHP Tom Eshelman. After going 10-3, 2.23 e.r.a. last year and winning the Phillies Minor League Pitcher of the year Award, Eshelman has dropped to a 1-3 7.71 e.r.a. performance so far this year. He was a Phillies major league camp Spring Training invitee this year and had an outside chance to make the major league roster if things had gone well for him in Clearwater in February and March.
