May 11: Neris blows another one tonight against the Mets. I am sick of this guy, time for Hector to be shown his walking papers. It's time for Kapler to try somebody else in the closer role.

I'll second that motion. Give someone else a chance to close. Neris is sort of the antithesis of Goose Gossage circa 1978, as far as dependability to get the job done goes. . In close games the outcome is never certain if you bring Neris in to close.

        AAA- Lehigh Valley news:

Brandon Leibrandt (3 starts, 6 relief appearances) still hasn't allowed a run in 24 innings pitched this season (2-0, 0.00).
After a brilliant first month and a half, Enyel de los Santos finally has a mediocre start (3 runs allowed in 6 IP) and takes his first loss of the season. Even after the loss he still has an eye-popping earned run average. (4-1, 1.41).
Dylan Cozens is still striking out too much and is hitting just .242. It looks like the power hitter will reach his 24th birthday (May 31) without making his major leagues debut..

Matthew Liberatore - a left-handed high school pitcher from Arizona, is now Baseball America's, draft expert, Jim Callis' pick for the Phillies in his Mock Draft. The Phillies pick third overall and Liberatore would be the first high schooler selected in the draft. If taken - he couldn't reach the majors soon enough as the Phillies don't have a single lefty on their major league pitching staff at the moment.

Seranthony Dominguez looks like he could be the high strikeout (at least one strikeout per inning average and 9 strikeouts per 9 innings) ,shutdown reliever that the Phillies bullpen really needs. He's still unscored upon in his brief time in he major leagues.

June 4-6 Amateur Draft. The Phillies are going to have to make their first round, third overall pick really count this year. They have no second or third round picks this year. 103 other teams' picks will be made between the Phillies' Round One/overall #3 pick and their fourth round/overall #107 pick.
The slotted money amounts for the first ten rounds set by Major League Baseball (which always amaze me) has the Phillies first round pick going for nearly 6.95 Million dollars. Their fourth round pick's slot value is placed at just under $525,000 and their 9th and 10th round picks are set at just over (9th round) and just under (10th round) $150,000.

May 30: Infielder Mitch Walding, 25, is joining the Phillies tonight in Los Angeles to replace Pedro Florimon who broke a foot on a foul ball yesterday. Walding's first game appearance will be his MLB debut. Florimon may be on the DL for an extensive period of time.

May 31: OF - Dylan Cozens has been called up today, on his 24th birthday, to replace Rhys Hoskins (jaw injury) who has been placed on the Disabled List. 3B - Mitch Walding got 'The Call" the day before, was immeidiately inserted into the staring lineup and made his MLB debut on 5/30. - Now word yet on whether Cozens will start tonight. Hoskins went to the DL after fouling a pitch off his face. (Freak Injury).

Dylan Cozens did not debut in the big leagues in his first day in the majors yesterday, May 31. However I could see him being inserted into the starting lineup tonight as the Phillies could throw 6 lefty batters against San Francisco Giants' RHP Chris Stratton tonight . The Phillies could start lefty hitters Cozens (replacing righty hitting Aaron Altherr in LF), Odubel Herrera and Nick Williams for an all-lefty hitting outfield, as well as using switch hitting C- Andrew Knapp, 1B - Carlos Santana and 2B - Cesar Hernandez batting from the left side. Righty hitting Maikel Franco (3B), Scott Kingery (SS) and Nick Piveta (P) would finish out the lineup.

Lefthanded starting pitcher, Cole Irvin, 24, is doing very well at Lehigh Valley (AAA) and may get his chance in the big leagues soon since the Phillies have an almost all-righthanded pitching staff.
Righty Enyel De Los Santos has been outstanding for Lehigh Valley also and he's only 22.
Both should represent the International League in the AAA all-star game if they are still in the minors by the time the all-star game is played in mid-July..

The Phillies are 30-24, .556 win pctg. which means they are winning 5 out of every 9 games. With possible Trade Deadline moves. or maybe even earlier trades, since Hoskins will be on the DL for awhile, this team can contend for a playoff spot.....performing Far better than writers' pre-season evaluations and predictions of this team's talent and likely performance. Lack of hitting has been a negative, while very good starting pitching has kept them over .500 and in contention for the division lead.
Starting pitchers Nola, Pivetta and Velasquez have been bellweather's , but filling out the rest of the rotation with quality starts has been difficult. Rookie reliever, Seranthony Dominguez has had a fantastic first month in the majors..(1-0 in 11 appearances and still unscored upon.)

Pivetta lasts just 4 innings tonight in San Francisco. While Pivetta has made strides from last year, he is inconsistent at this stage of his career. Pivetta will eventually become a dependable number 3 or 4 starter, I believe.
