  • Irvin Reassigned to the Phillies minor leagues camp - He's Blocked By Current Staff

Apparently, the 2018 AAA/International League Pitcher of the Year, Cole Irvin's progress towards a major leagues debut has been blocked by the Phillies current starting rotation. Irvin was just re-assigned to the Phillies minor league camp rather early, with two weeks remaining on the Spring Training Exhibition schedule. The Phillies play 14 games in 13 days through March 25, but Irvin will only take part in any of them as a "guest minor leaguer', with no chance of breaking camp with the major leagues team. You would think that Phillies might give him a chance to pitch in the majors this year as a long reliever, but the Phillies see him as a Major Leagues Starting Pitcher eventually, or possibly as a Trade Chip for the July 31st Trade Deadline. The lefty isn't in the elite group as far Velocity goes, but he commands four pitches and has great control. As for now, the Phillies are satisfied with their rotation of Nola, Arrietta, Pivetta, Velasquez and Eflin and that's going to be a hard obstacle for LHP - Cole Irvin to overcome.
