  • My Thoughts...

The Mets lost the division, the Phillies didnt win it. The Mets held the lead for the whole year, and if they would have beaten the marlins or nationals 2 more times, they still would have won the division. The mets collapse opened a door for the Phillies that they were not prepared to walk through. (for evidence see theyre playoff run). Truth be told if the phillies by any chance were actually better than the mets last year, it was by an extremely small margin. Here is my brief overview of these 2 teams for this upcoming season.

The Phillies offense is very solid, but to say that its easily head and shoulders better than the Mets is absurd. Cmon now. Obviously ill take Howard and Utley over Delgado and Castillo in a heart beat. But ill still argue that ill take reyes over rollins. Its a toss up, but ill take the speed and game changing ability of reyes over the conceited rollins. Wright over Feliz, easy one. Outfield goes to the Mets. Burrell besides when he plays the mets is garbage. I know that Alou is a huge injury concern, but healthy, ill take Alou. Centerfield goes to Beltran without discussion. Right field is a toss up again between Church and Werth/Jenkins. ill give it to the Philz though. Both catchers are subpar offensively so that goes to waste. When you compare them, there not that different. Ill take the phillies lineup, but not by the amount that some, not all, of the phillies fans are stating.

Starting rotation goes to the Mets. Sorry for making it straight forward, but thats just the way it is. Hamels is superb, and has a great career ahead of him. But in the here and now i dont see how you cant take Santana as the better ace. So what about the last 7 starts last year, Santana has more than proven over the course of his whole career that he is the best pitcher in baseball, and still will be. All the signs point to him having a great year this year: Pitching in the NL, weaker lineups, pitchers hit, better offense than in Minnesota, and pitchers ballpark. Pedro is a better pitcher than Myers. Flat out, thats a fact. Now whether Pedro can stay healthy is another question. But dont forget, Myers has had injury issues of his own too. When both are healthy Pedro is still an artist at the mound, so ill take him. Than the 3, 4, 5 pitchers can all be grouped together because i view them as being interchangable. Maine Perez and El Duque versus Kyle Kendrick, Jamie Moyer and Adam Eaton. I dont want to sound like a homer, but i honestly believe that the Mets 3-5 will outperform the Phillies 3-5. So the rotation goes to the Mets.

The Bullpen is really a toss up. I like the middle relivers for the Phillies more than i do for the Mets. Too many times did i see Willie misuse that pathetic excuse for middle relievers and screw up the game. The phillies win that section. But then when you go to set-up man and closer, that fight gets closer. I view Tom Gordan and Aaron Heilman as equals, but if i had to chose id go with Heilman probably because i am a Mets fan. than for closer, it Billy Wagner against Brad Lidge. I know that some of you Phillies fans might have a sour taste in your mouth from Wagners tenure in Philly, but he is still much, much better than Lidge, who has still not gotten over that Pujols home run he game up. Put him in Citizens Bank Park, and forget about it. So the bullpen really is split even for me.

Ill give the bench to the Phillies. They have more depth across the board for most positions. I do have a soft spot for Marlon Anderson and Endy Chavez, but after that i could really care less about the Mets bench. Ramon Castro is an adequate backup, but really nothing more. The bench and depth goes to the Phillies.

So if you are keeping track at home, that leaves us at a 2-2 tie. As you can see, i believe it will be a close race between these 2 teams. (forget about the braves, theyre gonna do nothing). In the end i think that the Mets will be able to overcome last years embarresment and take back the NL East crown. Why? Its hard to really say right now, but i just have that gut instinct that Johan will improve this team so much, not only on the field but the demeanor of this club. So many of you guys talk about the character of this Mets team and question it. Why? Because they have the over-exaggerated handshakes? Because of the collapse? This is a team that really does care for each other and has a great clubhouse. I dont understand the people who refer to them as spoiled NY'ers or bad people. Those allegations are just ridiculous.

Anyway, i digress. Mets win the division by 4 games.

    Agreed.

To make your case against Rollins, you call him conceited. Jimmy's conceit is irrelevant. He backed up his words with deeds, and right now he is the better shortstop. Jimmy also has speed, and he is much more of a game changer than Reyes. Reyes probably is capable of having a breakout year, but until he does, Jimmy gets the nod.

It is very close. The Mets win 4 positions, lose three, and catcher is a wash. If the Phillies have an edge (with Howard, Utley, and Rollins), it's not much. And the fact that Howard and Utley are lefthanders makes this team vulnerable to guys like Santana.

Of course it does. The Mets' starting rotation is impressive and clearly superior to what the Phillies will roll out.

The Bullpen is really a toss up. I like the middle relivers for the Phillies more than i do for the Mets. Forget the sour taste. Wagner is much better than today's Lidge, and Wagner was right to criticize the Phillies when he was here. The Mets have the better bullpen.

Ill give the bench to the Phillies. They have more depth across the board for most positions. I do have a soft spot for Marlon Anderson and Endy Chavez, but after that i could really care less about the Mets bench. Ramon Castro is an adequate backup, but really nothing more. I don't see any Phillie depth in the outfield. You are being generous in giving the Phillie bench the nod.

They will win by more than that.

"Ill give the bench to the Phillies."

Dude, the Mets had arguably the best bench in the National League in 2007. It was just everything else that backfired. Castro can spell Schneider against tough lefties and provides a HR threat. Damion Easley is a homerun threat. Marlon Anderson has shown he can hit for power. Aside from Werth or Jenkins (one of whom will be in the starting nine), do the Phillies have that power off the bench? Also, what about fielding versatility? Endy Chavez is one of the best fielding 4th OF'ers in Major League Baseball. His RF/9 is off the charts vs. league average. He hasn't comitted an error in over two years. So Taguchi, on the other hand, at any of his positions, is either at or just above league average with RF/9. To top it off, you have two guys capable of playing every infield position (Gotay and Easley) and two guys capable of playing all three outfield positions with two more waiting in the wings in AAA (Endy Chavez and Marlon Anderson [though he is a butcher at all three] and Angel Pagan and Ben Johnson, respectively). If there is one and only one thing that I'd say the Mets are MILES ahead of the Phillies in, it is the bench.

"Forget the sour taste. Wagner is much better than today's Lidge, and Wagner was right to criticize the Phillies when he was here. The Mets have the better bullpen."

I wish Wagner knew what you as a Phillies fan are conceding...he's saying you guys got the better bullpen! And the better rotation (even with Santana). Earth to Billy...a better ROTATION? IMO, the guy is just a chronic malcontent who would just say that while on ANY team not called the Houston Astros. I can see why Pat Burrell called him a "rat."

"They will win by more than that."

I agree, though think A) the Phils stand a good shot at the Wild Card, B) are frankly more worrisome to me as a Mets fan than the Braves, and C) I think they're a bit better than you're giving them credit for (except probably Rollins).
"They put me in the Hall of Fame? They must really be scraping the bottom of the barrel!"

Im a mets fan, i was just trying to be fair with both teams. All very good points that you made about the bench. I guess even as a met fan i overlooked what was such a huge strength in 2006.

In my opinion, it was a fluke. The Mets collapsed, I'm still not over it. I think that Reyes should go out and say the Mets are the team to beat. It worked for Rollins.

Another factor that must be considered in contrasting the Mets and the Phillies is the ability of each team to adjust during the season. The Mets' front office will try to shore up weaknesses by making significant deals. The Phillies' front office will do either nothing or superficial patchwork. The front office of the Mets gives that team a huge advantage during the season. The front office of the Phillies is worse than inept: it is hypocritical and corrupt, and it can be improved only if it is removed.

It will only be improved once Monty, Giles & Co. sell the team. Until then, yes men like Wade, 'Stand' Pat and Amaro will continue to collect their checks.

The Phillies did beat the Mets 12 times to help the collapse along. It's not like they just got lucky.

Oh so true...the fact is, everyone can talk and make bold predictions and say how the Phils got lucky, but until the games begin, that's all it is...talk.

It's a long season and anything can happen; let's wait until they play the games before simply awarding the division to the Mets.

How quickly we forget about a team that DOMINATED this division for 14 straight years...Not even mentioned in here!

That is actually a darn good point.
With Jones gone in CF and Kotsay now in Center, and the addition of Glavine how is Atlanta REALLY looking for this year?

All I'm saying is that you can't just completely rule out a team like the Braves. There are a lot of youngsters on this team, not to mention the middle of the lineup: Chipper Jones, Mark Teixera, Jeff Francoeur, Brian McCann. Trust me, the Mets had a tough time last year dealing with that. As far as Andruw is concerned. He did more to hurt the Braves last year than to help.

Not 100% sure if you took my question out of context (I was being serious), how are they looking starting pitching wise, any injuries?

I'm sorry, I thought you were being sarcastic. My bad! Our pitching is looking better this year. Jair Jurrjens is impressive in spring training. The jury is still out on Chuck James, and it looks like Hampton may even be healthy enough to pitch this season. We really need depth in our starting rotation. Smoltz and Glavine are getting older and it would be nice to have a 5 man rotation this year instead of expecting those guys to come in every 4 games. I think we may have that depth this year by adding some young guys like Jurrjens.

I'm not counting the Braves out, either. I just get a little irritated when pretty much everyone and their brother has conceded the division to the Mets simply because they landed Santana. This will be a 3-team battle for the division title; each team has their positives and negatives, and legitimate cases can be made for why each of the 3 teams can (and can't) win the division. We shall see what transpires.
