  • What the Phils must do to win

What the Phillies have to do to win this season (besides scoring more runs than the other team in more games than the other teams.)

1B – 1) Ryan, don't go to Subway, 2) hit left-handers, 3) cut down on the strikeouts, 4) hit a single to left rather than strikeout, and 5) make fewer errors in the field.

2B – Be Chase, don’t break anything, and hit for more power against left-handed pitching.

SS – I would like to say walk more, but I’ve officially given up expecting that. Just be Jimmy.

3B – Pedro, you have to play great defense, hit .275, and bang out 20+ homers. It's realistic.

LF – Be the Pat Burrell of the last half of last season, only do it all season.

CF – Shane! Come home, Shane! Often! You can do that if you become more selective at the plate and run your glutes off. While you're at it, play great centerfield.

RF – The Jenkins/Werth combo must hit .270 - .290, 30+ homers, and play sound defense.

C - Señor Ruiz, por favor, improve that warning track power to over-the-wall power and add 30 points minimum to your batting average.

Bench – Dobbs, Helms, Taguchi, and either Jenkins or Werth are experienced and versatile. Should be a strength over a long season.

P – In general, do what you haven’t done before: Stay healthy, cut down the gopher balls, and take a run off the team ERA.

    Starters
Hamels must win 22 and the Cy Young, both reachable goals. He’ll need to stay healthy and cut down on homerun balls
Myers must become more consistent than past years as a starter. He can’t pitch four great innings and then fall apart or go into weeks-long funks.
Moyer cannot have a 5.00 ERA again this year.
The double Durbin-Kendrick combo could go either direction, but Eaton will probably be going the wrong way.

    Middle relief
Madson could be excellent or a batting practice pitcher. He’s been both. Romero, come back as you were. Gordon, keep your right arm on your shoulder for the entire season.

    Short relief
Lidge, be all that you can be without joining the army.

View: The offense will likely be there, and the infield is among the best in the game. Young players like Ruiz and Victorino have to take further strides toward being all-stars and realistically could. But the pitching is still suspect, although on paper it should be better than last season. (If only the rules allowed paper players.) The starters after Myers have to prove they belong. The Phils must beat the teams they’re supposed to beat, something they have struggled with over the past years. They can’t count on beating the Mets eight straight again even if they didn't pick up Santana.

There isn't a darn thing wrong with Charlie Manuel. Just be yourself, Charlie, and screw your critics!

No, there isn't a "darned thing" wrong with Charlie Manuel. (Would "damned" be more accurate?) "Just be yourself, Charlie." (Isn't that how most situation comedy plots resolve themselves?)

No, Charlie is perfect. So is the front office. With Charlie and the front office guiding this team, and with Judway cheering everything they do, the Phillies have little to be concerned about.

All they have to do to be successful is just be themselves.

Judway is cheering, as always, otherwise what's the point?

What the Phils must do to win:

        1) Not drop five straight in the first week then remind everybody how long the season is

        2) Do not keep reminding everybody how many games are in a baseball season after a tough road trip until you...

        3) realize in early September that time is running out.

        4) The Mets must blow a seventeen game lead with five games left to play.

        5) Take out the chainlink fence in front of the dugout you always see Charlie hanging on. Fear of getting drilled will force him to pay more attention, and make better decisions.

        6) Dont pay Hamels more money. Pay his Chiropracter more money.

        7) Go to court and try to get the Lidge deal annulled. If its not obvious by now trips to the DL will be the standard for his season and someone else will be leading the club in saves, some people in the front office have less brain than even I gave them credit for, and I was talkin full metal Elmer Fudd caliber noggins, now thats sad....

        8) Put a gag order on Junior Amaro. I don't want to hear anything he has to say anymore. Forever.

        9) Stop using the same AAA veterans (Condrey, Durbin) to plug holes in the staff.
        I AM ROSTERDAMUS!!!

A Pat Croce lead group to buy the team would be a great start. As much as I want to get excited about this team, remembering who the current owners are brings me to reality. You just know that they won't make the moves neccessary to win, which is a shame because, if one looks at this team objectively, they are only a few players away from being an elite team. But Giles will see to it that it won't happen.

Croce asked WIP to shut up about his attempts to purchase the team. Perhaps the silence that has surrounded his attempt is cause for optimism.

Ryan's ear belongs to tbng. The pastrami sub immediately went into the garbage.

2B – Be Chase, don’t break anything, and hit for more power against left-handed pitching.
Yes, the old "be yourself" advice. Chase does have a habit of trying to imitate Milton Berle. He needs to realize that stand-up ain't his forte.

SS – I would like to say walk more, but I’ve officially given up expecting that. Just be Jimmy.
"Be yourself" again: my eyes are starting to tear up.

3B – Pedro, you have to play great defense, hit .275, and bang out 20+ homers. It's realistic.
Pedro has just been introduced to tbng, so it may take a while before he can absorb tbng's advice to "play great defense." Meanwhile, expect for April and May mediocre defense.

LF – Be the Pat Burrell of the last half of last season, only do it all season.
What Pat will be doing all season is already known. Will he also find time to play baseball? Only if he heeds the sage advice of tbng.

CF – Shane! Come home, Shane! Often! You can do that if you become more selective at the plate and run your glutes off. While you're at it, play great centerfield.
I knew Alan Ladd would creep into this thing. Last year, Shane ran his glutes off, all right, and ended up on the DL. Will the Shane of 2008 be more interested in apple pie than his guns?

RF – The Jenkins/Werth combo must hit .270 - .290, 30+ homers, and play sound defense.
Yes, they must or risk a spanking from tbng.

C - Señor Ruiz, por favor, improve that warning track power to over-the-wall power and add 30 points minimum to your batting average.
Address him as "senor" and throw in a "por favor" and he has to obey. Pero no entiendo nada.

Bench – Dobbs, Helms, Taguchi, and either Jenkins or Werth are experienced and versatile. Should be a strength over a long season.
If Helms is strength, I am Samson.

P – In general, do what you haven’t done before: Stay healthy, cut down the gopher balls, and take a run off the team ERA.
If only a pitching coach could teach this staff not to throw the gopher ball. Every time someone throws that pitch, the hitter puts it into the seats. Well, as someone once said, "Experience is a dear school, but fools will have no other."

Regarding health, guys like Hamels seem determined to hurt their backs, and guys like Eaton seem determined not to. You can't win.

The double Durbin-Kendrick combo could go either direction, but Eaton will probably be going the wrong way.
                Is that just for starters?

                Middle relief
Madson could be excellent or a batting practice pitcher. He’s been both. Romero, come back as you were. Gordon, keep your right arm on your shoulder for the entire season.
                If only they would listen.

                Short relief
Lidge, be all that you can be without joining the army.
Lidge would not pass the physical.

Technically, tbng is right. It isn't one thing that's wrong with Charlie. On Saturday, against the Reds, Charlie left Eaton in the game in the 8th inning with a one-run lead. Adam blew it as quickly as he could. In the 9th inning, Charlie had Durbin pitching instead of Lidge. Later, with runners on second and third and one out, Charlie elected to pitch to the next hitter rather than walk him intentionally and create a force at every base.

So as we can easily see, there isn't one thing wrong with Charlie. One could even argue that there is nothing wrong with Charlie. Those decisions that he made prove that the good ol' boy is just following tbng's sage advice and being himself.

Selig should investigate that game. I smell something rotten, but it's not Bill Giles this time. Namely it's the Reds abysmal performance against Adam Eaton. Eaton pitching into the 8th? We all know that is not conceivably possible, unless the Reds were conspiring with gamblers to intentionally keep the game close. This has the makings of another Black Sox scandal!
