  • Wes Helms Released

Yet another terrible free agent signing by Gillick has been shown the door. Helms was released yesterday to make room for Rudy Seanez. When will Gas Can Gordon and Extra Bases Eaton be released?

Gillick has pulled off the impossible: He has made Ed Wade look like Paul Owens. Gillick, supposedly the architect of Toronto's World Series teams and Baltimore's and Seattle's playoff teams, clearly doesn't give a damn. He is only collecting a check, while sharing drinks and laughing at Phils fans who want a winner with his old Houston crony Giles.

Our billionaire owners won't let him spend any money. Gillick is forcred to dumpster dive. It comes from the loyalty of the fans. Why pay for a championship team when the fans will show up regardless of what is on the field?

Because more fans show up and more merchandise gets sold when you win championships. But, MontgomerGiles has yet to figure out how to quantify that effect on a balance sheet, so they'll just stick to what they know. Keep costs down, keep margins high. Wins and losses don't show up on a revenue statement.

Gillick is not forced to do anything. If he had a sincere concern for the job he is supposed to perform, he would quit, but he is nothing more than a check-cashing, pension-padding fraud.

i'm getting the feeling Gillick is going back to Seattle anyway. didn't i hear he was part of an ownership group placing a bid on the Mariners?

admitting mistakes is something the Phillies have never done. look at those years they kept throwing Mesa out there. Gordon is simply the same thing.

i personally think the worse thing he's done was re-sign Manuel. but even then how much leverage would have had to move away from him even if he wanted after last season.

            Go, Wes!

Has the deal for Wes Helms been completed? Or was it a conditional deal based on how well Helms performs for the Marlins? I so, the Phillies should be getting their pick among some of the Marlins better prospects. Helms was performing pretty well for Florida the last time I checked his stats.

Yes, the deal was completed. The Phils, I kid you not, received $1. That's right. $1 dollar. There has never been a more complete group of gutless knuckleheads running any business, company or corporation in the history of mankind than the Phils.

Want Ad - Major league Talent Evaluator Wanted - Apply: Philadelphia Phillies

"Phillies Got One Dollar For Helms" - Steve Jeltz.

That's pretty pathetic, Jeltzie! The Phils should have known that Helms is at least a competent major leaguer that could have provided Bench Strength to practically any major league team that is not named The Philadelphia Phillies. Since Helms had enjoyed some success previously with the Marlins, it's not surprising that he's playing more closely up to his capabilities, if not actually flourishing since rejoining Florida.

If they had made the move conditional, they might have had their pick of several pretty good prospects in the Marlins minor league system. Instead they get Nothing!

Everybody knew the Phils were going to cut him, so why should they give anything up? That means the Phils would have had to waste a roster spot holding on to Helms to try and get the market interested. Not worth it, if you ask me. Look, I don't think the Phils are exactly geniuses, but this one isn't really one of their mistakes--unless you count signing him in the first place last year.
