  • Let's play the game of...

"Who will Pat Gillick pick up from the scrap heap next?"

Basically, it's a game of predicting which struggling or subpar player Pat Gillick will either trade for, claim off waivers, purchase their contract from another team, or sign as a free agent.

Rules of this game: It can NOT be a big-name player, (i.e. Derek Jeter) but it can be a player past his prime. (i.e. Jeremy Giambi, oh wait that was Ed Wade who got him )

Let me start out: I predict that Pat Gillick will get Anthony Reyes from the Cardinals through a trade for cash considerations or a PTBNL. End result? He goes 3-7, 6.28 ERA, and lots of angry fans threatening him from the bleachers. That's why you get one shot in Philadelphia. Do bad, and you'll have people hating you.

The Padres have released Jimmy E.
Giles would certainly force Gillick to sign him -- especially IF nagging injury is what has affected Jim's recent performances.

Let me throw in another guy that is a "can't miss" in the eyes of Pat Gillick - Matt Chico, 0-5 with a 6.42 ERA. Can't miss, eh Pat? Well, your absent-minded signings are not helping the Phils' cause and guess what happens? They miss the playoffs by like two-three games again. Gillick, Gillick, Gillick...

He'll justify the Schilling trade yet!

                      My Pick !

Ray Durham - He fits all the requirements, particularly the "Past His Prime" one.
