  • The Official "Everything wrong with the Phillies" Thread

Ok I;m new to this board, but I live 10 minutes outside of Philly. I am a huge Phillies fan and I goto about 10-15 games a season (but watch almost all of them) Anyway, I watch these morons miss the playoffs this year, and get off to a horrid start here in 2006.

    Anyway, here we go:

Their Pitching SUX. the phillies havn;t had a "big name" pitcher in a while. After last season I was hoping that they would go after some starting pitching. Schilling (who is pitching great right now) wanted to come back. But God forbid we actually let a good pitcher on the roster. Tejada was young, but I thought he was pretty good and had potential. But instead, we traded him for Delucci (only has one hit in 6 at bats so far this season). Basically, the phillies pitching conisists of medeocre starters, and a crappy bullpen.

We have horrible back ups/utility men. WHY THE HELL DID WE GET RID OF PEREZ!?!?!? I always thought perez was a good, reliable player. But now we have crappy back ups like Gonzalez, and Delucci and Nunez. They are horrible hitters.

Management is atroucious. Old CHunky CHarlie has got to get his act together. He is a horrible manager who makes horrible decisions. he has a horrible team put together.

Just think of all the players we could have had but didn;t:
    Mike Piazza
    Johnny Estrada
Billy Wagner (or we could have resigned wagner in the middle of the year and then got someone good for him)
    Curt Schilling

If you got a point for every man you left stranded on base, the Phillies would go undefeated

Basically, this crappy team has to now go on a winning streak just to get back into the division race. And the way things are looking, that's not happening anytime soon.

Hey buddy, I'm also new to this forum and live about 45 min. outside of philly, I love the Phillies too, but I like to say I have a mutual respect for everyteam in Major League Baseball, except the Yankees and Braves of course. I do have to agree with you on some points such as the bullpen and starting rotation, These past games with the braves have shown exactly how bad, wait I shouldnt say bad, but weak, the bullpen is, there really is no releiver who can come in and just shut the opposing team down.
As for Charlie, I agree, he needs to do his job correctly, David Bell protecting Ryan Howard in the lineup? I'm a David Bell fan, but you don't protect your next big bat with an aging thirdbaseman with a bad back.
About Thomas Perez however I must disagree, Perez, although he did have his moments, was not a solid reliable backup player, most times it seemed they had just kept him around to pie the players in the face after games, one good thing about him however was that he could play every infield position. I liked the aquisiton of Dellucci, with 28 Homeruns last year with the rangers in a park that allows homeruns like citizen bank park should come around eventually, we just all need to remember, it's still early. I guess we will have to wait and see what happens and developes this season.

Although they may miss the playoffs, I don't think it is right to call them morons for it. Maybe just the coach....

This is not completely true. The Phillies pitching is actually slightly above average. Although I wouldn't call Myers an ace, how many aces are there now adays? It changes from year to year. He is a great #2. Lieber is also an above average pitcher and I believe Madson will settle in as a nasty pitcher himself. So what you have is basically 3 good #2's (assuming Madson produces like he did in the bullpen. Lidle is adequate at 4. Do you need an ace to win the World Series? Normally, yes. Do you need one to make the playoffs though? No. I think the X factor is Floyd and how bad he does. As for Schilling, that was three years ago. Time to get over that.

Tejada would have been great, too, but how much are the Phillies going to spend? They already have one of the highest salaries in baseball. It comes down to making better overall decisions. Even if they did get him, where would he play? Rollins is much better defensively.

Utility players aren't that important compared to starters. Perez sucked by the way. I never thought the day would come when I heard someone say they missed him, but I was wrong...

Agreed. He does stink. He will be gone soon, though.

Mike Piazza and Estrada are terrible. Thank God we don't have them... I would rather have Millwood for 2 years like we did instead of Estrada now. He is worthless. Lieberthal is actually a better hitter. He will be gone next year though anyway.

Thats true. The Phillies 1900-1979, 1981-200? have a true legacy of achievement. You wouldn't want to taint that.
