  • Blanton to DL, final cuts expected shortly.

#3 starting pitcher, Joe Blanton was placed on the Disabled List today with a strained oblique, and unfortunately that is not an April Fool's Joke. Kyle Kendrick is expected to slide into the rotation in Blanton's place and get at least one start before Blanton is able to return.
The Phillies are still at 31 men on the roster. The final cuts to get down to 25 players could come as early as this afternoon.
The Phillies have a day game against the Pittsburgh Pirates in Clearwater scheduled today, but head north immediately afterwards. They play two more exhibition games against Pittsburgh on Friday and Saturday in Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia. After being off Sunday, they open the regular season with a 1:05pm scheduled start against the Nationals in Washington this coming Monday - April 5.

Looks like after all that work, Kendrick would have gotten the #5 spot even if he was terrible. He's really gotta perform now, him or Moyer, or we're in big trouble. Blanton is Dr. Reliable.

It looks like Andrew Carpenter, who would have started the season at AAA Lehigh Valley (Allentown, PA), International League, will be promoted to the last spot on the Phillies pitching staff, while Blanton is unavailable, and he'll be used in long relief..

With just over 24 hours before the first pitch of the Phillies 2010 regular season, the Phillies official roster shows 24 players and just 11 pitchers. There are 17 returning Phillies and 7 new players who have never played for the Phillies before on the roster. Catcher, Brian Schneider; Infielder, Juan Castro; Outfielder Ross Gload; Pitchers, Roy Halladay, Danys Baez, Jose Contreras, and David Herndon should makle their Phillies' team debut during the first few days or first week of the season. Herndon is the only player on the roster with no previous major leagues playing experience.
The 25th and final roster spot was supposed to be filled by pitcher Andrew Carpenter, but that has not been confirmed yet and the last roster spot remains vacant at this point.
Three pitchers - Joe Blanton, J.C. Romero, and Brad Lidge will open the season on the Disabled List.

Finally, on Opening Day Andrew Carpenter was added to the roster as the 25th man and 12th pitcher. He has rookie status since He's had just three major league appearences - one in 2008 and two in 2009. His 2009 appearences included one win. The delay in adding him to the roster may have meant that the Phillies were looking to make a deal or add someone from the waiver wire (another team's late cut.) No one was deemed an appropriate pick-up by Amaro & staff, so Carpenter will open the season in the majors.
Antonio Bastardo made only about eight regular season appearences and one post-season appearence so he is considered a rookie as well. The third rookie is David Herndon, who should make his MLB debut this week, and thus far has not pitched above the AA level.
