  • Jim Thome Approches 2,500 Strikeouts.- Other Phillies Career Milestones in 2012

Jim Thome is only nine strikeouts away from 2,500 career strikeouts .Record holder Reggie Jackson is the only player with more career strikouts with 2,597 strikeouts.
(See recent entry in the Trivia Section about Jim Thome for more details).

On the other hand these positive milestones may be reached by Phillies players in 2012:

Placido Polanco needs about 25 hits to reach 2,000 hits.

Jimmy Rollins needs about 120 hits to reach 2000 H. In addition, Rollins needs 12 doubles for 400-2B and he needs 27 steals for 400 SB.

Upon his return from the Disabled List, Ryan Howard will need 14 home runs for 300 HR.

Roy Halladay currently needs 10 wins for 200 wins and Halladay needs 58 strikeouts to reach 2,000 strikeouts.

Here's to 110 and 1,058 more for Halladay, all in a Phillies uniform, I hope.
"No matter how great you were once upon a time — the years go by, and men forget,” - W. A. Phelon in Baseball Magazine in 1915. “Ross Barnes, forty years ago, was as great as Cobb or Wagner ever dared to be. Had scores been kept then as now, he would have seemed incomparably marvelous.”

That would be terrific if Hallady remained with the Phils for the rest of his career and reached 300W & 3,000K with them.

I'll say one thing about Thome. He is consistent! Entering the games of Sunday 4/22/12 he has 2494 Strikeouts in 2494 games played, averaging exactly one K per game throughout his long, 22-seasons career..

June 8: Jim Thome becomes 2nd player in history to strike out 2,500 times. His secondof two strikeouts of the night was his 2,500th. It occured in his 2,500th major league game, so Thome has averaged exactly one strikeout per game over his 22 year MLB career.

In all likelihood, Big Jim retires this season and waits until he's eligible for the HoF. He'll be an automatic since he's never been tied to the PED era - though I'm sure I'm not the only one who has his doubts.

Either way, 1500+ runs & 1500+ RBI is huge. Not to mention the 611 HRs.

Roy Halladay recorded his 2000th strikeout (July 29) - 67th MLB pitcher to reach 2000Ks. He finishd the game with 2006 lifetime Ks.
Today Halladay passed Billy Pierce, who starred mostly with the Chicago White Sox (1948-1965) and finished with 1999 career Ks and Andy Benes (1989-2002) who finished with exactly 2000Ks.

And a very odd strikeout it was. He struck out David Ross for the third out of the first inning and the team headed off the field. Roy was shown yelling the "eff word" at himself for giving up two runs as he crossed the 3B line toward the dugout. Then he stopped and turned around. The camera showed Ross on first base with Charlie Manuel heading out to talk to the umpire - confusion all over the field. The first base umpire ruled that catcher Carlos Ruiz trapped the ball and didn't tag Ross, and while the Phillies were leaving the field, somebody must have motioned to Ross to run to first. The play stood and Halladay had to pitch a four-out inning.
