  • 2012 Attainable Player Milestones

Baseball is the one team sport where a majority of the action is based on individual achievement. Whether it's the pitcher alone on the hump or the hitter he's facing in the batter's box.

One of the "good" things to come from a disappointing season is that you get to see some of the younger players show what they can do for future seasons. Granted, this team's system is barren in the upper levels, but so far Dom Brown has looked pretty solid.

For the veterans, there's not much else to play for now except personal pride and maybe reaching some career milestones. Here are some I found that can be achieved this season.

Jimmy Rollins needs 24 hits to reach 2000. He needs only 10 SBs to reach 400.

Chase Utley needs 5 HR to reach 200. Chase also needs just 6 assists in the field to reach 3000.

Ryan Howard needs 9 doubles to reach 200 and 8 HR to reach 300.

Juan Pierre needs 19 SBs to reach 600.

Placido Polanco needs 25 runs scored to reach 1000.

Roy Halladay needs 7 wins to reach 200.

Cliff Lee needs 53 Ks to reach 1500.

Hardly a consolation for a lost season, but at least it gives these guys an extra something to strive for.

Halladay needs to go reach 6-2 over his remaining 9 or 10 starts to finish the season at 200-100.

It's crazy but Juan Pierre has an outside chance of winning the 2012 National League Stolen Base title as a part-time player. It's a down year in SB in the majors for some reason. Mike Trout, now with 37 SB for the Angels ought to lead the Major Leagues and the American League in steals.
      Here's the NL's Top 5 in SB:

      Michael Bourn, ATL - 32
Emilio Bonaficio, MIA - 30 (Disabled List)
Dee Gordon, LA - 30 (Disabled List)
      Juan Pierre, PHILA - 29
      Jose Reyes, MIA- 28

Last night was Hamels' 14th win - one short of his career high of 15.

He's got a shot at 20, but with about 8 starts left, he'd need to win at least six of them. He may need to go very deep into those games too, because we've seen too many times how this bullpen can destroy even the largest of leads.

Phillies haven't had a home-grown pitcher win 20 games since Chris Short did it in 1966. Larry Christensen got very close in '77 when he won each of his final seven starts to finish with 19 wins for the season.

Great job by Doc Halladay in defeating the Nats' young star pitcher Gio Gonzalez yesterday! Now he needs to go 4-1 to finish the season at 200-100 lifetime (196-99).

Halladay was up early running laps and tossing frisbees to himself today. He even helped get the tarp off the field.

Jimmy Rollins keeps moving up on the all-time Phillies franchise lists.

He's #1 in games at Shortstop after passing Larry Bowa just over a week ago during the Marlins series.
He's third in total games (all positions) at 1760
He's third in Stolen Bases (396)
              4th in base hits (1988)
and 11th in Home Runs (184). through Aug. 25, 2012.

Congrats to Jimmy for reaching 2000 hits as a Phillie. He's now 4th All-Time for this franchise. He needs 235 hits to overtake Mike Schmidt who stands at 2234.

He's also now just 2 SB shy of 400.

One Phillie and one ex-Phillie are in line to be the next player to reach 400 SB. Besides Rollins, Bobby Abreu has been recalled by the Dodgers and has the same SB total as Rollins
(398 SB). There are 34 players who have at least 400 SB in the Post-World War Two Era (1946 to present). I've posted the list recently under this website's "History Of The Game" section. Look for the title "Reyes swipes 400th bag - Rollins Closes In"

Jimmy Rollins hasn't shown much interest in reaching the 400 Stolen BaSES MILESTONE before the end of this season. It seems like he's been stuck at 398 career SB for quite a while now.

With a win on Tuesday, September 11, Roy Halladay advanced his career record to 198-99. He is now one of only five pitchers all-time with at least 150 wins to have won 2/3 of their career decisions (.667 winning percentage). Whitey Ford (236-106, win. pctg. .690) is the all-time leader in that category.Ex-Phillie Pedro Martinez (.686 win. pctg.) ranks third.

Jimmy Rollins stole a base in that game for career SB #399.

Jimmy got his 400th SB last night making him the 3rd player in Phillies history to reach 400, joining Billy Hamilton (508) and Ed Delahanty (411). That will make Rollins just he 24th player in MLB history with 400 doubles, 400 steals, and 2,000 hits. There are only 7 in history with that combination and also 200 HRs (Rollins is at 189).

                        Can Ryan do it?

Ryan needs 4 HRs to reach 300. After being the quickest in games played to reach 100, 200 & 250 HRs, he needs to hit all four tonight in order to achieve the 300 mark before Ralph Kiner. It took Kiner 1087 games to do it and Ryan will play game 1086 of his career tonight.

With a few teams to overtake and behind in the Wild Card race by a few games, the Phillies chances of making the playoffs are slim, but if the following Phillies players reach these individual milestones before the end of the season, it ought to produce some wins and close the gap quite a bit:

                          Ryan Howard: 300 Home Runs - Needs 3 (297).
                          Chase Utley: 200 Home Runs - Needs 2 (198).
                          Roy Halladay: 200 Wins - Needs 2 (198).

Ryan just hit #300. Second Philly ever and second fastest behind Kiner. Good thing is, it's his 2nd off a LH pitcher this week.

                            Grats Ryan!

Ryan Howard just missed being the fastest hitter to 300 HR by 6 games. He did it in 1093 games with the Phillies from Sept. 2004 to 2012, compared to Ralph Kiner's 300 HR in 1087 games done between Opening Day 1946 and early 1953 (first 294 HRs with Pittsburgh 1946-1952 and final six home runs with Chicago-NL in 1953).
Howard has also averaged just over a hit per game throughout his career with 1099 hits in 1093 MLB games.
