  • Phillies & the '83 Postseason

    I didn't realize this.

The Phils, heading into the NLCS were to face off against the LA Doders. During the regular season, the Fightin's lost head-to-head by a record of 1-11 while being outscored 49-15. Yes - 15. For you playing at home, that's a .083 win percentage while scoring 1.25 runs a game.

Amazingly, things did a total 180 during the NLCS and the Phils dominated the Dodgers. Offensively, they were practically a one-man wrecking crew of Gary Matthews who tagged 3 HR in the 4-game series, which is fairly ironic since he only hit 10 the entire regular season.

Thinking back, I was in high school at the time and was out of baseball for a few years while concentrating more on football and girls (not necessarily in that order) which is why I probably don't recall such a turnaround.

I was a fan of the Phillies back in those days but I still was always amazed the Phillies won the pennant that year.

Bo Diaz...I guess he was ok but he seemed to have a off year compared to 1982.
    Pete Rose.....He batted like 245
Joe Morgan....his raw stats don't look to good but nowdays he probably had a decent year. I always thought Trillo was better. (not now)
Ivan Dejesus......Back then I thought he was pretty good but not now. thought he was better than an aging Bowa back then.
Mike Schmidt.....He had a good year but like Morgan it really didn't seem like he did because of his batting average.
Gary Mathews....He really didn't seem to have a good year until the NLCS.
Garry Maddox......I guess his defense was good but he seemed to have a off year at the plate.
Von Hayes.....I think he had a big slump due to the Philadelphia pressure
Sixto Lezcano.....I recall he did pretty good
Tony Perez....I think he hit over 350 that year as a limited player

John Denny.....Cy Young but he just didn't do much for me. Probably because he never struck anyone out.
Steve Carlton....I would have to say he was really hurt by the offense
    Charlie Hudson
    Kevin Gross
Marty Bystrom..........I don't think any of these guys even won 10 games for em.

Al Holland ......He wass a bright spot along with the Willie Hernandez, Ron Reed and Tug McGraw. I still never understood why McGraw didn't make the post season roster.

An odd season you don't see all that often. Three relievers neared 100 IP, Von Hayes (nicknamed 5 for 1 because of the trade) didn't do anything really, and Bobby Dernier infused energy to a really old ballclub. I really don't know how they made it to the postseason.

Thats right Dernier was on that club too. The Phillies must have had quite the platoon system going on that year. Maybe thats how they won because on paper the Cardinals and Expos look like the 27 Yankees compared to them. Even the Cubs lineup looked better. I remember that because my brother used to get so mad about how the Cubs couldn't beat em.

I kinda have to agree with his starting 8

          Jody Davis over Bo Diaz.....Cubs
          Bill Buckner over Pete Rose.......Cubs
          Ryne Sandberg over Joe Morgan.......Cubs
          Larry Bowa over Ivan Dejesus.........Cubs
Mike Schmidt over Ron Cey.........Phillies but I remember back then thinking that this one was pretty close
          Leon Durham over Gary Mathews.......Cubs
          Garry Maddox over Mel Hall.....Phillies
          Keith Moreland over Von Hayes........Cubs

The Phillies obviously had the better pitching though.

I think when you look at this it really wasn't close.

And the Ryne Sandberg deal... yeah that hurt.

Thanks yeah i've always liked the Phillies. I probably watched more Phillies than Sox games because we didn't have the station the Whitesox played on. I think it was like 75 bucks a month to watch the Whitesox. That is deff a big reason Chicago turned into a Cubs town.

Yeah looking at it now, it's not close at all.
