  • Top 5 Pirates of all-time

Ok longtime Pirate fans. Who do you think are the top(best) 5 Pirates of all time not including pitchers. The top 5 imo are:

    1. Barry Bonds
    2. Honus Wagner
    3. Roberto Clemente
    4. Dave Parker
    5. Willie Stargell

No way Bonds over Wagner AND Clemente.

I would also throw in Paul Waner before Dave Parker

The cobra was awesome but so was Waner. The reason i put Bonds ahead of everyone because some experts believe he is the best player of all-time Period.

You have a top 5 list?

                Here's mine

                1. Honus Wagner
                2. Paul Waner
                3. Roberto Clemente
                4. Arky Vaughan
                5. Willie Stargell

I have to give Bonds to the Giants.

I looked at the Pirates top 10 All-Time Leaders for both cummulative stats and single season stats. I looked at Avg, OBP, SLG %, OPS, G, AB, R, H, 2B, 3B, HR, RBI, BB, & SB.

Looking at Cummulative stats, and giving 10 pnts for 1st place, 9 for 2nd, etc., here are the top 5:
                  1. Honus Wagner
                  2. Paul Waner
                  3. Willie Stargell
                  4. Roberto Clemente
                  5. Max Carey

If you just count the # of times each player was in the cummulative stat top 10, here are the top 5:
                  1. Paul Waner
                  2. Honus Wagner
                  3. Roberto Clemente
                  3. Willie Stargell
                  5. Arky Vaughan

Looking at single-season stats, counting 1st place as 10 pnts ....
                  1. Ralph Kiner
                  2. Paul Waner
                  3. Omar Moreno
                  4. Brian Giles
                  4. Arky Vaughan

                  Counting single-season top 10 appearances:
                  1. Ralph Kiner
                  2. Paul Waner
                  3. Brian Giles
                  4. Omar Moreno
                  4. Willie Stargell
                  4. Honus Wagner

If you looked at the top 10 for each of the 4 lists above (I know I only wrote 5 for each) and did the same 10 pnts for 1st, 9 for 2nd, etc. the top 5 are:
                  1. Paul Waner
                  2. Honus Wagner
                  3. Willie Stargell
                  4. Ralph Kiner
                  5. Arky Vaghan

** All that said, I really think consideration should be given for Max Carey as being the #1 all time Pirate. Not only is he one of the all time great Pirate players, but he is hands down the #1 manager in Pirates history. As a manager, he is #1 for seasons managed with 16, #1 for wins (around 400 more than #2), has the #1 winning %, #1 for pennants won with 4, and tied for #2 in World Series wins.

You can't just look at offense, you have to look at the whole package; defense, speed and intangibles too. No way would Clemente stay as low as 4th on the list if you did factor in other variables.

I have to agree. The list is flawed in MANY ways.

Barry Bonds is so tainted... he shouldn't be first for anything.

Thou Shalt Not Rank Clemente Below #2

                            1) Honus Wagner
                            2) Roberto Clemente
                            3) Willie Stargell
                            4) Paul Waner
                            5) Fred Clarke

That is why I would rank him number 1.

                              1. Roberto Clemente
                              2. Honus Wagner
                              3. Ralph Kiner
                              4. Willie Stargell
                              5. Barry Bonds

Kiner played on some bad Pirate teams. But he was a star.
Bonds will always be remembered as a Giant. But he had some great years in Pittsburgh.
Stargell was just a great leader.
Clemente and Wagner need no explanation. But Roberto was the most complete player I ever saw. So I put him number 1.

Welcome back ARod. Hope you are a Yankee forever.
