  • Padres trade Chris Burke

Peoria, AZ (Sports Network) - The Seattle Mariners have acquired utility player Chris Burke from the San Diego Padres in exchange for cash considerations, the club announced Sunday.

Burke was a non-roster invitee with San Diego, and will join Seattle's major league spring training in the same capacity.

Burke, 29, spent last season with Arizona, and batted .194 in 86 games, while playing six different positions -- including all four infield spots.

"As we continue to build depth in our organization, we thought Chris was a nice fit as insurance at a number of positions on our big league club," said Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik.

In five MLB seasons with Houston and Arizona, Burke has a .241 career average in 445 games with 22 home runs and 106 runs batted in.
