  • Eugenio Velez

Not sure how many are following him closely, but Velez is having a fantastic spring so far. In just the first 5 games he is hitting .429 (.500 ob%) with 6 runs scored, 1 triple & 5 stolen bases.

I so hope they can find a place on the roster for this guy.

Interesting player. His minor league career suggest he could be a good ballplayer. On the other hand he is almost 26 years old (May 26). Where has he been all these years?

      make that 6 swipes.
i saw him a bit last season. that guy can fly! his defense, though, is average on his best days. but with vizquel out and durham and aurelia nursing, velez is in a very good position to impress.

i hope to see him when i go to spring camp in a couple'a weeks.

When was the last time the Giants had this much speed? For years they had no speed at all. Now,with Fred Lewis, Rajai Davis, and Eugenio Velez the Giants now can field a pretty good 4x100m team.

          ^^
i can not recall this much speed, wags... even in spring training.

i'd bet on shierholtz over lewis, by the way.
and, he'd give davis a run for the money in a home-to-second race.
velez's speed, though, is untouchable by all other giants.
i hope that he learns to field and how to manage a bat.

While Velez is having a great spring, should we worry about Eliezer Alfonzo just yet? He is 0-15 so far.

Velez got his 6th steal today. 1-for-2, raising his AVG. to .391.

His minor league numbers look good enough...why wouldn't the Giants give him a starting job? Do they think they're going places this season? Velez looks like a good SB threat...

the weakest defensive infielder can not be the shortstop.
have you watched teams that have a shortstop who is barely average on his best day?
                  it's not pretty.
if velez starts a short, the giants, in effect, are throwing in the towel.
as it is, vizquel will miss very little of the regular season and perform magnificently with his glove.

Velez is being compared to Deion Sanders in speed, and that's saying something!

I like the idea of him at 3B, partly because having Omar next to him will help cover some ground, but partly because as they said on SFGiants.com, it's a react position, not a footwork position. And the learning curve is less. And with no incumbant at the position it's a place to try him out.

And I'm with Tony, In the 43 years I've followed the team, this is the most speed I've ever seen. And as this team isn't going to hit much, any cheap runs we can steal with speed is a big help.

Perhaps modeling after the mid-1980s St Louis Cardinals?

That reminds me of one of my favorite non-Giants moments....Jack Clark homering off of Tom Niedenfuerer in the 1985 NLCS! Heh Heh

And to answer your question Wags, absolutely yes! I'd love to see Frandsen get 100 rbi's like Tommy Herr did in 1982.
