now that the season is a couple of weeks old, a few thoughts...

Starting pitching is everything to this team. The last two wins are good examples of that.

Fred Lewis needs to be put in LF everyday and left alone. He can play.

Aurelia and Durham are done, and it serves no purpose keeping them around. Velez and Ortmeir provide just as much, are cheaper, and actually have an upside. Richie and Ray-Ray have been great Giants, but the time has come to say goodbye.

And say it loud, say it proud, Bengie Molina for MVP!

the starters are the bright spots, but the relievers have stepped up, too.

lewis'll eventually become the everyday leftfielder. the skipper is having a difficult time pulling the trigger.

aurelia, durham, roberts and vizquel are all facing unemployment.
aurelia is a solid utlity player, and provides veteran steadiness in the clubhouse.
(congrats to him for inching up the all-time san francisco giants hits list and surpassing matt williams for spot #9.)

molina wears it on his sleeve. team mvp + willie mac award winner.

Are you saying the Giants should bench Richie and Ray-Ray or release them? Do they have guaranteed contracts?

And, yes, the pitching is the key. If the staff can be consistent this team can win maybe 76-78 wins is is a lot more that I thought they could coming out of spring training.

Bench for sure, release if appropriate. I think both of them have contracts running out at the end of the year, so the cost would be less than had it been last year. I'd rather release Durham than Richie. And we are seeing what happens to 40 year old's when they get hurt, sorry Omar.

And Tony's right, the pen has been a LOT better this year. I think in particular Walker has been great.

durham's flub last night allowed pujols to bat.
i am not anti-durham. i like him, if only for the fact that he has the highest lifetime batting average among active players with 10+ years who have never batted .300

anywaze, fred lewis hasta be out there every game so that he can show what he can do. ortmeier needs more time, as does velez. not to show what they can do, but to learn. davis seems to have hit a wall. it seems to be mental, not physical - he really gets down on himself. last night he misread a ball with a first-step in, then raced to mirabelli's alley and nearly made the catch anyway.

sure, on-the-job training can be painful to watch, but baseball is a game of patience, as was designed to break your heart. besides, it's not as if we did not see this coming.

I'd rather release Durham than Richie.

aurelia is more valuable 'cause of his 3 gloves and 1 mitt in his locker. durham has one glove.

holt gettin' gunned down had nothing to do with flannery.
but aurelia ought to have been held at third on bocock's single to center. he was nailed by plenty.

If Sabean is let go after the '08 season what kind of GM should the Giants get? And who would be some of the leading candidates?

I sat behind Lewis in LF on Sunday....he definitely has some fans out there. I think Durham needs to be benched...sad but true. I wouldn't mind watching the new kids learn, it makes for a more traditional baseball team where you watch players develop rather than trading them at the first sign of trouble.

Maybe Durham should get another glove - that one he has doesn't seem to work too good...

But the young rotation and players like Velez and Babe Bowker do give a glimmer of hope for the future.

                      Revisiting this two weeks later....

Looks like Lewis has kept it up. With Davis now gone, there is no reason not to have Fred out there every day.

Lincecum is the real deal, that's for sure.

And Bengie Molina is still the MVP!!

Giants win again behind a great pitching performance by Jonathan Sanchez. He pitched 8 innings allowed 1 ER and struck out 10 with just one walk as the Giants beat the Reds 3-1. Very nice. The Giants are suddenly 11-13 which is FAR better than I thought they'd be at this point int he season.

Just outstanding tonight, that's for sure Wags. If we could get a decent outing from Zito this win streak could stretch itself out some.

One bonus of the good SP is that Lowry being out is less of an issue.
