Do the current woes of Jonathan Sanchez make the Sanchez/Cabrera trade any better of a trade for the Giants?

Holding a pitcher accountable for how many runs his team scores is like holding the designated hitter accountable for how many runs his team allows.

An individual statistic is meaningful only if it is based strictly on what the player does and not on what the other players on his team do.

Contrary to what most baseball fans claim, a pitched ball which is hit into play is not a strike.

What Sanchez does for the Royals is irrelevant. All that matters from the Giants prospective is how productive Melky is and whether the Giants will sign him long term.
Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.-Crash Davis

If true, then why does the local news media make such a big deal over Sanchez performing so poorly?

I have no idea. I guess the media wants to make Sabean look like a genius? Still it makes no sense. Even if Sanchez was having a Cy Young caliber season with the Royals does that diminish what Melky is doing for the Giants this season?

Just because Jon got DFA'd today http://www.mercurynews.com/giants/ci...medium=twitter doesn't mean much. If you followed Jan Sanchez' career, you might think that given the right circumstances that he could end up being a 20 game winner. The fact that he washed out doesn't mean anything really. It was a fair gamble for the Royals to make.

As Giants fans we all watched Jonathan Sanchez tease us for many years. He was so inconsistent. He had strikeout stuff but he walked way to many batters and would often just fold during a game when things didn't go his way. Watching his 2009 no-hitter on TV was so much fun and exciting. In 2010 he seemed to turn the corner going 13-9, 3.07 ERA, 205 K, 96 BB. He led the NL in H/9 but also led the league in walks. He could never go that deep in games because he would walk so many guys. He'd have like 100 pitches by the 5th or 6th inning every game it seemed.

For reasons I don't understand, the news media thinks the way to evaluate how your team did in a trade isn't to compare what you have now vs. what you previously had, but to compare what you have now vs. what you gave away is doing now. Since what you gave away isn't on your team, the performance of such a player on his new team is immaterial.
