  • Buster Posey chasing Dick Dietz!

In 1970 S.F. Giants catcher Dick Dietz had 107 RBI. That is the San Francisco Giants all time single season RBI record for a catcher.* Can Buster catch Dietz? We'll find out.

    Through 140 team games
    Dietz- 98 RBI
    Posey- 87 RBI

Granted Posey is well behind Dietz at this point. However, Posey has been red hot since the All-Star break plus he plays the next six games in two great hitters' parks: Coors Field and Chase Field.

*Note: The all-time franchise record is held by Walker Cooper in 1947 with 122 RBI.

It's pretty amazing but in a few years he could arguably be the best catcher the Giants have ever had with well over 100 years of history.

He should reach this point before age 30. The Giants have never had an all-time great at catcher ever. In San Francisco their best catcher ever is either Tom Haller or Bob Brenly. Roger Bresnahan is a Hall of Famer but he only played seven seasons (751 games) for the NY Giants.

I would think Chief Myers was the best. He had a pretty decent career with em. I would say Haller or Danning are next.

Frankly, the bar isn't too high for Buster to reach to be the Giants best catcher, but with that said, he's on track to be a VERY good catcher for quite a while. His at bat against Blanton yesterday when he hit his homer was a thing of beauty. I'd just like him to get better at blocking balls in the dirt. But that's a quibble.

All in all, a MVP candidate now, and likely many years to come.

            Here's a pitch-by-pitch analysis of that 11-pitch at bat!

There was a handful of crucially important series over this past weekend, and among them was Dodgers vs. Giants in San Francisco. The Dodgers came in four and a half games behind the Giants for first…

And Buster just went yard to get his 20th HR of the season. Only Haller and Dietz are previous Giants catchers to get 20 in one year, and now Buster too!

Actually, that was Buster's 21st home run!

Her's how Posey stacks up against what I consider the two greatest seasons by a Giants' catcher.

                      Code:
[B]Year Player G PA R H 2B 3B HR RBI SB CS BB SO BA OBP SLG OPS OPS+ TB [/B]
                      1947 Walker Cooper 140 547 79 157 24 8 35 122 2 UK 24 43 .305 .339 .586 .926 140 302
                      1970 Dick Dietz 148 612 82 148 36 2 22 107 0 1 109 106 .300 .426 .515 .941 153 254
                      2010 Buster Posey 128 532 67 152 33 0 21 89 1 1 61 85 .330 .404 .538 .942 167 248

It would be great for Buster to reach the marks, but long-term, I think it'd be very wise to make him a full-time 1B. Less games lost for rest during the season and a much higher reduction of injury risk. I mean if the Gmen had a star at 1B, I'd understand, but move Buster there and sign one of the many C's this offseason with the kid as a backup could help him produce more as he'll likely see more starts.

I wonder if they will go after A.J. Pierzynski.

They have a rising player in Brandon Belt at first base. I have followed Belt all through his professional career. I saw him play at San Jose. Belt is the real deal. Belt is going to be Fred McGriff/Justin Mounreau level of hitter in his prime. Plus Belt is brilliant with the glove. Also, a lot of Posey's value at catcher is calling a good game and his defense.
