Also, Ponson really only had one good year (2003), otherwise, he's been a pretty terrible pitcher his entire career. I guess it could be a decent move if he has a mid 4 ERA, but that's even a stretch...

That's right. It's a good risk, though. There is hope for Ponson and he was very cheap.

The only chance Ponson has of looking good is if he happens to consistently pitch on days when the Cards offense is rolling. The last two seasons the guy has averaged 15 base runners per nine innings.
