Everybody who knows anything about Enos knew he was not to be trifled with. A friend of mine from New York told me this story about Enos after he went to the Yankees: After a round of golf he and Slaughter and two other guys went to the 19th hole for a couple of cold ones. After sitting around for a while, a kid walked up to Slaughter and said "Arent you Enos Slaughter ?" Slaughter said "That's right kid". The kid said "I just saw you drink about 4 beers, dont you have a game tonite ?" Slaughter responded " Ill drink 4 more, kick your ass and still play tonite...." Think he was kidding????

Now granted, Enos, while being a very good player, wasn't in Stan's category as a superstar, but considering tenure on the team, his salary should have been much higher. But supposedly Slaughter would go to the Cards in September and ask for an advance on the next seasons salary, no doubt to keep up with his alimony payments. You're right 64 CDs. He never made any real $ with St Louis. By the time he got to the Big Apple his best years were behind him. About his 6 wives, I heard he used to get pretty physical with them if they "got off track". Even though Slaughter had put up the numbers he had a difficult time getting voted into the Hall. I never understood why it took so long....anybody have insight into why the writers were so slow to act ?Comment

Slaughter felt that the writers kept passing him up because he once cut Jackie Robinson on a close play at first, and the accepted version at the time was that Enos had done it deliberately.Originally posted by portobob

And since Robinson was also cut by Garagiola and Medwick, Slaughter's explanation sounds credible. Nevertheless, the accusation that he had cut Robinson deliberately became accepted "fact," and it could well be the reason why the writers resisted voting him in for so long.Comment

We kinda beat this horse to death in a previous thread, the Slaughter-Robinson spiking story, but late Bob Broeg, a very respected baseball historian who was the Cards beat writer for the STL Post and was at the ballgame, said about the same thing. The entire incident would be blown way out of proportion, some later reports would even have it that Slaughter jumped up and did a karate type kick into his thigh.Originally posted by shlevine42
