Some guys the Cards traded away last couple seasons.

    pham 124 wrc+ (this year)
    voit 135 wrc+
    kelly 120 wrc+
    Mercado 112 wRC+

Sure some of them will regress a lot but could have used that production so far.

Still a pretty good last couple weeks just half a game back now thanks to a good pitching. The offense needs to step up though.

        I am still incredibly skeptical.

Bad news for the Birds...Carp and Molina are coming back soon and will be immediately inserted back into the lineup.

They really lost the deadline this season.when you are in first place at the deadline you definitely have to do something to improve the team. Don't have to trade away your best prospect for a superstar but at least get a couple decent relievers and a rental bat. Especially rental bats (running out contracts) are currently super cheap in terms of prospects. The cubs for example gave up almost nothing for castellanos.

They were stuck. They knew that making one upgrade would not really make them a contender (they would be right), but selling would tick off gas-station fans who actually thought they were really good because they were in 1st place.

They know this team was not good enough to win the division. They could have sold the farm for a coin-flip game play-in, which is REALLY stupid. Any major upgrades still leave them well short of the Cubs and would cost what very little they currently have in the minors. Not buying was fine. it was not selling the past two years which was the killer.

The point you were making - Minor upgrades would not move the needle very much. The bullpen is the strength of the team and needs very little upgrading. They could give up decent prospects for a 2 win player - but the team is FULL of 2-win players - including some wasting away in AAA right now. The last thing they need is more mediocre players roaming the OF.

For the second year in a row, an unfortunate winning streak right before the trade deadline made the aesthetics impossible to sell to the general public.

This organization was so smart for so long. Watching them go soft-rebuild every year like dumb**s organizations like the Angels, Reds, and O's is not what I ever expected.

Castellos has 6 WAR in 7 seasons. He isn't very good and there is a reason why they gave up nothing for him. I am sure they have AAA players better that would have cost them nothing. But the Cubs understand the importance of aesthetics, so I will give them that.

First place again for now after a big winning streak. Crazy season in the Nl central. Feels like the cubs should run away and several times they did slowly gain ground only then to have a huge 2 week losing streak and then slowly climb up again.

overall the division looks pretty mediocre compared to the top of the other divisions. Even the nationals who were terrible the first two months are now ahead of the cubs and cards in the overall standing.

Playing crap teams again. I get very little excitement about another 85-87 win team that may or may not make a Coin Flip game.

Leading the division by 2 games with about 30 games to go. Can they hold on to this?

I don't think they will win the division. The WC looks like a strong option.

Cards dropped from 4 game lead over cubs to 2 game lead losing brewers series 2-1. Cubs have a lot easier schedule though, however they also lost their 3rd best hitter baez and their second best hitter Rizzo sprained his ankle. If Rizzo is also out for two weeks this could negate the schedule advantage. Both teams now are almost equally projected the rest of the way.

Huge Series win against the nats facing Strasburg, corbin and scherzer. The cubs were coming in hot but helped out dropped a series 2-1 against the reds after killing the pirates the series before.

now the cards are 3 games ahead with 10 to go but 7 against the cubs. Cubs also have 3 games against the pirates while cards have a tougher task against Arizona.

if we assume the cubs sweep the terrible pirates again and the cards go 2-1 against Arizona the cards would need to win at least 3 out of 7 against the cubs to win and 2 out of 7 to tie it and force an extra game.

this seems like a possible task albeit the cubs could of course run really hot and win 6 at any time. The series against Arizona is really important you need to win 2 games at least there.

Good luck, fellas. I sure hope the Cards clinch the division title this weekend!
