Some guys the Cards traded away last couple seasons.

    pham 124 wrc+ (this year)
    voit 135 wrc+
    kelly 120 wrc+
    Mercado 112 wRC+

Sure some of them will regress a lot but could have used that production so far.

Still a pretty good last couple weeks just half a game back now thanks to a good pitching. The offense needs to step up though.

        I am still incredibly skeptical.

Bad news for the Birds...Carp and Molina are coming back soon and will be immediately inserted back into the lineup.

Geez. S**t or get off the pot, Mo.

Like choosing no dinner at all when you can't decide between the steak or lobster.

Spinning their wheels inside a hamster wheel.

          Enjoy slightly-better than mediocre indefinitely.

They really lost the deadline this season.when you are in first place at the deadline you definitely have to do something to improve the team. Don't have to trade away your best prospect for a superstar but at least get a couple decent relievers and a rental bat. Especially rental bats (running out contracts) are currently super cheap in terms of prospects. The cubs for example gave up almost nothing for castellanos.

They were stuck. They knew that making one upgrade would not really make them a contender (they would be right), but selling would tick off gas-station fans who actually thought they were really good because they were in 1st place.

They know this team was not good enough to win the division. They could have sold the farm for a coin-flip game play-in, which is REALLY stupid. Any major upgrades still leave them well short of the Cubs and would cost what very little they currently have in the minors. Not buying was fine. it was not selling the past two years which was the killer.

The point you were making - Minor upgrades would not move the needle very much. The bullpen is the strength of the team and needs very little upgrading. They could give up decent prospects for a 2 win player - but the team is FULL of 2-win players - including some wasting away in AAA right now. The last thing they need is more mediocre players roaming the OF.

For the second year in a row, an unfortunate winning streak right before the trade deadline made the aesthetics impossible to sell to the general public.

This organization was so smart for so long. Watching them go soft-rebuild every year like dumb**s organizations like the Angels, Reds, and O's is not what I ever expected.

Castellos has 6 WAR in 7 seasons. He isn't very good and there is a reason why they gave up nothing for him. I am sure they have AAA players better that would have cost them nothing. But the Cubs understand the importance of aesthetics, so I will give them that.
