  • 2013 All Stars

As of this entry, the Cardinals have the best record in baseball by 2 games and the best run differential by almost 20 runs. I count 7 Cardinals who have All Star chances. Who do we say deserves it vs. who makes it? Lets try to be open-minded and leave homerism for other team fans around here...

    Lets start with position players:

Matt Carpenter: Has been the best 2B in the NL this year by a lot. Will not get voted in, but should/will be selected unless some garbage team gets a 2B snuck in there.

Yadier Molina: Will be the backup to Posey. We cna all debate who is better this year, but both guys will be there.
Carlos Beltran: May or may not be there. Could get voted in, could be selected, or could be left home. Right now, I bet he doesn't make it.

    Pitchers:

Adam Wainwright: Will be there, and depending on how he pitches the next 4 weeks, and where his spot in the roation falls, is a contender to start.
Shelby Miller: Should and will be there, barring a huge ERA collapse in his next several starts.
Lance Lynn: Should be there, but I think he will be left off. I really don't think we can get three starting pitchers there since every tram has to have representation and AS teams now have 4-5 relievers on board.
Edward Mujica: I am nit a big reliever guy, but he has been about as good of one as you can have so far. If you have 4 relievers on the team, he should be there. I don't think he will be there, however.

Here is my rundown. I will update over the next month.

    Who should be there:

Carpenter, Molina, Wainwright, Lynn, Miller, Mujica

Who will make it (as of now):

    Carpenter, Molina, Wainwright, Miller
    1885 1886 1926 1931 1934 1942 1944 1946 1964 1967 1982 2006 2011

    1887 1888 1928 1930 1943 1968 1985 1987 2004 2013

I don't know about starters as far as the voting thing goes (I don't follow that at all, so I have no idea who the popular guys are). I think that being on the roster from St. Louis should be: Yadier Molina, Matt Carpenter, Carlos Beltran, Adam Wainwright, Shelby Miller, and Edward Mujica.

It all depends, like you said above, about where they will fall in the rotation come ASG time, but I think both Miller and Waino will go. I don't care if they pitch or not (actually rather they didn't, or at least not very much). Mujica probably won't go, I think he has a strong chance but I never know how a MGR will pick his relievers. Bochy is a smart guy (seems to me anyway) and he may go with Mujica.

Carp isn't well known throughout the league, so I doubt he gets the votes to start (though I do believe he has earned that right so far). He should certainly be in the mix, and Bocy will appreciate that he can play him just about anywhere in later innings!

Molina or Posey, can't go wrong there. Doesn't matter who starts, the other will be right there to play next. I figure Matheney will be on Bochy's staff too, and both of them being former Cs, their outstanding guys will certainly get time.

Beltran, whether he gets the votes or an invite anyway, I don't know if he will go or not. I know he wanted to rest last year, but went and tired badly down the back half of the season. I hope he skips the game, votes or no votes.

Truthfully, I'd like to see Matt Carpenter, Shelby Miller and Edward Mujica go. Have some fun. Experience the thrill ride. Come back and get to work. Let Waino, Beltran and Yadi rest and recharge. I would prefer if those three went, they only played minimally as well. I want the young guys to have fun, I don't want anyone getting hurt.

EDIT: By the way, a couple questions. First, how are the Redbirds doing in the voting? I know we don't have a huge market, not in a giant metropolitan sense anyway, but we do seem to do OK in these votes. Just wondering. And here is a question not so important in regards to the Cardinals, the ASG, or baseball in general. I am just curious (and this is crazy having been an intel linguist and speaking 3 languages) but what is a "homer" or "homerism"? I see it around here quite a bit lately, and don't know if I truly understand what it is. Second, in that same vein, I see guys like Ben Grimm use this abbreviation a lot, IIRC. What does that mean? Looks like I should spend more time studying computer-talk rather than German and Mandarin!

Well, I'll revive this one a bit.

How about David Freese getting on the roster again in a run off vote like last year? Of course his numbers were solid this time last year (he just hit a HR today, but only has 4 HR with 23 RBI) and he had the World Series MVP hangover going too. Still, he just had a 20 game hit streak snapped, sat a day and has now gone 3 for his last 5 with 2 R, that HR, and 3 RBI in the past two days. I still haven't looked at any voting numbers (probably won't either) and I am sure he isn't amongst the leader, but he is really getting hot now and maybe he can find his way on the roster? Maybe Bochy will snatch him up and put him on there too?

Now here are the ones I think would make it if it ended today: Wainwright, miller, Molina, Beltran, Carpenter. Lynns last few outings will make it hard for him and I am not sold Mujica has the name recognition. 3B is week, but Wright and Sadnoval will make it (barring injury).

That sounds about right. I still think Mujica may get in that 'pen though. Romo will be there, but he got beat up bad last night (BS, 0.1 IP, 1 K then: couple hits and walks, Roy said something about an error in another thread, and the Giants lost). So maybe Bochy will be looking for more help back there, to give his guy a day in the sun, but use someone else's arm in the game!

            Here's another vote for Freese:

ESPN has him down for going .379/.449/.586 with 4 HR and 19 RBI in 87 ABs since May 17. That's pretty damn good, and worth a look for the team. I am sure he has outhit many stars in that time.

still he shouldn't be an AS with all those games missed and the mediocre start.

Yeah. .284/.355/.395 is not an AS worthy season from a below-average fielding 3B. Regardless of how his best/worst stretches were distributed.

There will also be a lot of guys playing in the game that "shouldn't" be there. I am not saying he is one of the best, just that perhaps his hot streak may go over well with the voting public. I should log into mlb.com and check out the vote totals, they usually show those don't they? When I had cable, I think they would talk about the close races in the voting on Sportscenter, just something else to talk about that isn't really all that relevant...

I was glad he went last year, just to have the opportunity, because I think a lot of guys seem to really enjoy the AS break festivities, perhaps the younger or first timers more so, I don't know. Just going off what they say about it when asked in interviews. However, just because I tend to be a nervous nellie when I see the Redbirds playing exhibition games like that, I'd rather they just went and didn't actually play! No unnecessary injuries guys!

Molina, Beltran, Shelby and Wainwright should be in. Freese has no business being an AS this year.

Relative to others at the position - Carpenter may be the best of the bunch.

How is he as a second baseman? I know his bat has been outright ridiculous this year, a great addition to the lineup for sure! I haven't heard any one gripe about or praise his glove at the new position yet.

Advanced metric say he has been above-average so far. Eye -test matches to this point.

It is exciting to be able to fill that offensive void we have had there for quite a while. Hopefully he can continue to do well in the field, if not even improve to really pick up the team at that troublesome position.
