  • 09/10 vs the cards now

    Which Team would you take?

I always feel that those 09 and 10 Cards underperformed. I was especially dissapointed with the 10 Cards. the Teams had a prime Pujols and holliday hitting and carp and wainwright both in CYA form. on the other Hand their IF hitting (apart from 1B) was quite weak and yadi was not a good hitter yet.

now on the other Hand the Team is much deeper. anyone in the IF can hit (even if some of them are not the greatest defenders) and the OF can hit too. they have probably more depth in pitching and the BP too. but on the other Hand they have no prime Pujols and holliday might be declining too. carp is not pitching anymore (hopefully he can have another comeback) and wainwright is still very good but I'm not sure if he can challenge the CYA again.

So who do you take? today's deep Cards or the more star laden Cards of the late 00s? and why couldn't those Team with carp, wainwright, Pujols and holliday all having Superstar seasons not do more?

I'm not complaining since they won a WS a year later but I feel that the 09/10 Teams might have had even more potential than the 2011 Championship Team (Pujols was starting to decline, wainwright injured- but they got somewhat lucky that berkman got another Monster season out of his injured Body to compensate for that).

I'd have to go with the current Redbirds. I really don't remember much about the '09 and '10 squads other than Carp and Waino both being awesome. I missed most of '09 in Afghanistan, then after being medically retired in '10, I spent most of that summer on my 2007 BMW R1200R motorcycle riding all around the Midwest. All a fog. I just remembered that we did lose our first NLDS then, right? '09 it must have been?

Don't remember those Birds, but I do know that this team is (and has been for the past 2.5 seasons now almost) very good. I am more disappointed that we didn't do better (despite the WS win and the amazing comeback v the Nats in Game 5 last year) in the past few years. I am not ready to say this team will win the division yet either, as we saw in the past couple years after leading early.

These guys have a very good lineup, pretty good defense, and the pitching is way out of control right now! If for some crazy reason Wainwright and Miller were able to pitch near as well as they have so far, you'd have to take them over younger Waino and Carp in '09-'10! Beltran is still doing great, Yadi has been a hitter for a few years, Craig and Freese are hitting on the corners, Little Carp is way better than I'd hoped, Jay will get better (great glove in CF!), Holliday isn't the same as 2007 but he is still productive, and big boy Matt Adams ready to launch some off the bench!

Whatever we had then, this has got to be better!

Now, easliy. The 09/10 Cards were very top-heavy. This team (who leads the majors in W% and run differential) can't find ABs for Matt Adams and has Tavaras, Wong, and Martinez unable to make the club, and Motte, Carpenter. Furcal, Garcia on the DL for most/all of the year.

In fairness, the 09 team won 91 games and would have won a lot more than that if Holliday was here before July.

        Why do you say that?

he is very good but has ever a pitcher won a CY after TJ surgery? He is still Young enough but that is a pretty big surgery. I hope to be wrong though.

the farm System really seems to be turned around. a few years ago it didn't seem to be good and then they got a couple of guys out of nowhere and more waiting down there.

Half-way through the season and still one of the top contenders.
