  • cardinals drafting: luck or skill?

the cards are a team that is always in contention and thus doesn't get to draft the top talent usually.

however they where "lucky" with a lot of guys who had no hope at all:

    pujols: 13th round
    mCarp: 13th round
    adams: 23rd round
    rosenthal: 21th round
    craig: 8th round
    freese: 9th round
    siegrist: 41th round

of course any team has such a cinderella story but those are a lot of marginal prospects that became solid MLB players or more. agents don't recommend players to sign if they are drafted past 10th round because they say "those guys are drafted so that the talented players have someone to play with". of course piazza was also drafted that late but still most players that late don't make it (especially siegrist who was drafted in the "scouts son" round).

so where they lucky? or skillfull? or is their strategy to sign raw high upside, high failure potential (wild throwing flamethowers without control...) guys with some doubts?
I now have my own non commercial blog about training for batspeed and power using my training experience in baseball and track and field.

Both, of course. they have gotten very lucky with some of these players, but I do think they have some people who know what they are doing too.

This is exactly what came to my mind. Well put, my friend.
