Terrible defense from the Birds today.

Kinda sucks that they had the tying run at second with nobody out in the eighth and couldn't get him in. It sure looked good for a minute there.

Matty Adams needs to start swatting. Slow start so far.

And Wong and Heyward and Molina. But that is typcial...The other two Matts and Peralta have been red-hot. Hard to get everybody hot at the same time.

wong and holliday did not have a bad start to the season. 120 OPS+ for wong so far.

Who said anything about Holliday? I said the "other two Matt's have been red-hot." I said Heyward was off to a bad start.

I didn't notice all the walks from Kolten, so I stand a little corrected. Even though a .278 average with a .333 slugging and two terrible plays in the field is not super hot. The 5 walks (getting pitched around while hitting in front of the pitcher) are skewing it a bit.

Who the hell makes the stupid schedule? The Cardinals had to fly home after Sunday's game in time for a Monday afternoon game -- and then the Brewers had to sit around and wait more than 48 hours for the start of game two in the series. And then barely 12 hours before a game at noon the next day.

Eh, it's too early to get upset about anything. It isn't like we are witnessing something completely wrong, like when Ryan Franklin blew apart at the start of the 2011 season. That was something to get frustrated over, with Tony LaRussa still trolling Franklin out to the mound long after he had proven to be a bust. I understand loyalty, but damn. The guy was killing our team and ruining his own legacy. Then he freaked out on the fans, that was ugly and worth getting upset over. This is nothing.

I just watched the replay of John Lackey's 8 Ks today vs the Brewers. Man, he had them swinging at some crap WAY out of the zone! The first 5 Ks he had were on what one announcer called his slider, and they were all down near the dirt and way out of the strike zone. Just a lot of bats flailing out across the plate trying desperately to make contact on what were clearly balls. Molina seemed to be calling and setting up for that pitch, too. There were 2 Ks that came on something that looked more like a fastball (90 and 91 mph respectively), and another that moved like the earlier sliders, but closer to the zone. Great job by big John Lackey today! Go Redbirds!

Oh yeah, and a bunch more doubles hit today, with Matt Carpenter smacking two more. Mark Reynolds had two hits (!) including a 2B. I mentioned in another thread how much Bothrops loves it when guys on the interwebs start extrapolating stats all over the place, so I called Matt Holliday netting 30 SB this season because he stole his second base already today! Just for you my friend!

Love this return of the doubles-hitting machine.

Interesting note: The Birds have only allowed 21 runs in 9 games so far. 24% of them have been driven-in by Joey Votto homeruns.

The mayor of Dublin just gave the key to the city to Matt Carpenter.

Matt Carpenter has quickly become one of my absolute favorite players over the years. Each season I love watching that kid play ball. The jump/roll over the Reds catcher the other day was just spectacular. I am so happy to see him and Molina crushing doubles right now, too. I was out of the 21st century for the past couple days, so I just got to watch the replays of highlights for the past couple games. Damn fine stuff!

What happened to Matt Holliday, and is there any word on the injury?

Sore back. Doesn't seem like a big deal.

That's good. Did he tweak it when he scored from second on Matt Adams' 2-out single? It looked like he was a little awkward when coming down the dugout stairs after scoring on that play.
