  • No thank to Descalso, who is batting a laughable .232/.291/.333 with 5 errors in only 15 games. Thats a -5 WAR for the season. Oof.

    • Somebody explain the double switch to those of us too dumb to understand why, in a one-run game, Matheny, if he needs a run in the ninth, wants Peralta out of the game entirely, and the pitcher's spot up instead of Peralta with the needed run in scoring position. If MM wants Kozma batting ninth instead of the pitcher, why doesn't he just use Kozma as the PH for the pitcher, and still have Peralta to come up and drive him in? I can understand why there are times when the double switch make sense, but that doesn't mean that it is automatically the best strategy in every knee-jerk substitution.

If he expects to need the offense later, he has just wasted Peralta and gained nothing, as Kozma (or somebody - Socolovich?) would have batted in the 9th spot anyway.. If he doesn't expect to need it, what is the purpose of the exercise? If it's a defensive move, is Kozma a measurably better asset on defense than Peralta?

      • Martinez has been spectacular. Looking over the box score, I haven't really realized how great Rosenthal has been doing this year as well. I see he has a 0.62 ERA. That is much more like it. I doubt he is going to keep that up all year, unless he is due for a magical relief season that some guys get to enjoy, but I do know it has been a while since I last cursed his name. Last year I think he was always high on my poo list.

Kozma isn't even that much better defensively than Jhonny P.

But he is smaller, so he must "look" like he's better.

And he is scrappy. Scrappy means great at defense.

But seriously - hopefully this team can keep scraping along until Lynn, Holliday, and Walden get back.
I would be shocked if we don't trade for a 1B too. Thankfully they have banked a lot of wins here.

Lance Lynn will be the next to miss the season.
Lynn is on the dl ( forearm strain - but often that diagnosis turns out to be a ucl injury.

I know. Lynn, the doctors, and the organizatiion all seem pretty confident that he will return when the stint is up in about 10 days. Lets hope.

                  • A lot of bad luck with injuries but the team is also quite old which increases the risk of injuries. Some youth would definitely help.

According to FG....the Cards had the 5th youngest opening day roster in baseball.

that surprises me, because many of the "stars" (wainwright, Molina, peralta, holliday) are 30+ years old.

                        • What an interesting season so far.

Cards mourn loss of yet another drunk driving victim.
                          Cards start destroying everybody.
                          Everybody gets hurt.
                          Cards continue to destroy everybody.
Cards investigated by the FBI for hacking.

You just never know in baseball.

                          • What is real funny about this idiotic password-gate, is seeing these fools online who seem to think our organization had to spy on the Astros to do well. Laughable isn't even a good enough word to describe how ridiculous that notion is.

                            • Has Matheny ever attempted a squeeze play in his entire managerial career?
Reynolds probably has the lowest probability of a ball in play of any hitter in baseball.

This, a day or two after wasting his only legitimate bench player (Jay) sending him up to sac bunt for the pitcher. Hes carrying two backup catchers and 13 pitchers, one of whom hasn't appeared in a game since he was recalled eight days ago.

Imagine how many games the Cards would have won by now, if Matheny wasn't so damn knee-jerk rigid

                              • Wow, Jaime Garcia has been a helluva lot better than I expected since he returned from the latest injury! What a roll! That guy always did seem to be a very fine pitcher in the first half, then disappear in the second. I will just enjoy him while he is still hot, but won't hold my breath down the stretch.

Jason Heyward is hot lately as well, at the plate that is. This has been a nice addition to the lineup with Holliday and Adams gone. He has homered in each of his last three games, and in his last seven games mlb.com has him down for this line:

                                .464/.483/.964, 13 for 28, 6 runs, 4 HR, 9 RBI

                                Last 15 games:

                                .364/.386/.655, 20 for 55, 7 runs, 4 HR, 10 RBI

                                Last 30 games:

                                .321/.339/.547, 34 for 106, 13 runs, 6 HR, 17 RBI
