  • Another huge moment for Holliday today! Loving it!

Chance #10 to go 10 over. Which if it happens...

Would be the 9th straight season. That seems like a lot.

    Go Dodgers.

    • Well- postseason coming down to the last game of the season. Exciting, if noting else. About a 25% chance to make it to the tie-breaker ans about a 13% chance to make it to the WC game and about a 7% chance to go to the NLDS.

Lots of individual coulda-woulda-shoulda games this year - but that is baseball.

I know it is hard for us spoiled Cardinal fans to believe - but sometimes your team just doesn't make the playoffs.

      • Well - its been fun, everybody.

Great young core with Diaz, Marp, Piscotty, Grich, and Wong and Reyes, CMart, and Weaver. Lots of payroll flexibility coming-up. This team is still a lot younger and more talented than people think. Should be good enough to compete for playoff spots for years to come. Can't win 'em all.

        • Jeremy Hazelbaker was a pleasant surprise, being a 28-year-old rookie. He slugged .480.

          One last rookie roundup: What is the future for the Cardinals players who debuted this year? Mike Mayers (24, 1-1 W-L, 27.00 ERA in 5.1 IP), Luke Weaver (22, 1-4, 5.70 ERA in 36.1 IP), Alberto Rosario (29, .184 BA in 38 AB), Dean Kiekhefer (27, 0-0, 5.32 ERA in 22 IP), Carson Kelly (21, .154 in 13 AB), Jose Martinez (27, .438 in 16 AB), Matthew Bowman (25, 2-5, 3.46 ERA in 67.2 IP), Alex Reyes (21, 1.57 ERA, 10.2 K/9 in 46 IP), Seung-hwan Oh (33, 1.92 ERA, 19 SV, 11.6 K/9 in 79.2 IP), Aledmys Diaz (25, .300 BA, 17 HR, 65 RBI in 111 G).

I'll ignore all the guys who are not going to become much:

Diaz - looks like a legit player. People always liked his offense, but outside of too many errors the first month of the season, had lots of range and ran the bases well. Could see more ASG from him.

Reyes - 5+ WAR stuff. NASTY beyond belief. If he can keep his BB rate at a reasonable levelm should the anchor of the staff for a long time.

Oh - Was great in Korea and is great here. He should be a good reliever for years to come.

            Weaver - ceiling #3 starter. More likely a #4.

Kelly - will be groomed to be Yadi's replacement. But given how well Yadi played this year...that transition might still be further away than people think.

Hazelbaker - might be a 5th OFer depending on what everything looks like.

The rest of the guys are non-prospects with no future on the club (Mayers/Martinez/Rosario/Kiehefer), a rule -5 pick who may battle it out for end of the pen spots (Bowman),

I agree. There are a couple Problem positions but Overall there is a good Young core. Is the defense an issue going Forward? not the most talented defensive Group but they could probably save a couple runs by not playing some guys out of their defensive spectrum. I mean maddon also does that with the cubs but he usually shifts good defenders to the left in the spectrum.

Cards also got a Little unlucky with the pythagoran record (which is 88 wins) although some of that might have been MM.

I think they will compete the next years. the cubs and also the dodgers (with all their prospects and Young guys) are extremely well equipped but behind them I see quite a gap. the mets have big injury Problems in their Rotation (NS is a big risk too I think- there are guys suggesting mets pitching coaches teaching questionable mechanics) and Washington is not that deep either behind their top guys. Pittsburgh will always have financial contraints as do the brewers who have collected a ton of good prospects.

maybe philly and Atlanta come around in 1-2 years but generally I think there will be a lot of room behind the two top Dogs of the NL.

Forgot the giants, they probably will stay dangerous.

              • Just a lot of bad luck this season. Only 1 stretch of solid/good defense in the middle of the season and the bad stretch of no offense near the end is what cost them. Just were never able to put it all together but still made it interesting near the end of the season and finished with with their 9th straight winning season. Never had a losing season under Mo and just one since the 2000s hit.

No doubt. i actually didnt even want to see us in the playoffs this year, not this team. It was fun at the end, but i dont like waiting around for guys who cant get on base to hit a home run. It was also disappointing, but expected, to see Waino and Wacha this season. I am excited about CMart and Reyes though, leading our rotation in the future.

Big tip o' the cap to Matt Holliday! I wish him the best wherever he goes next. The guy was awesome for us, and a class act.

Other than a few guys like Aledmys Diaz, Yadi Molina, Steven Piscotty and Matt Carpenter, it seemed like all we had in the lineup was different versions of Matt Adams... Maybe we can clean that up a little bit. Same with the defense, like we had Matt Adams playing all around the horn....

First of all - nice to "see" you. This place is boring without you around. You can joke around and have disagreements with people - unlike a lot of these oversensitive folks that have taken over the place. Please don't leave again.

Yeah, i noticed that when i was looking over some threads here. Seems like it is getting worse than it was before. Some people are just too sensitive, and it isnt much fun trying to avoid their easily-insulted egos. Whatever.

This season was just crazy, from the little i saw of it. I dont really remember a team like this before. I mean, sure i remember the teams with big power guys like Pujols, Edmonds and Rolen, and the insane McGwire-led HR years before that. But this team just didnt seem to do much other than slug home runs. No defense, and other than the very end when Reyes showed up the only pitching seemed to be from CMart with occasional brilliance from Waino or the hot arm for the day. I dont know, it just really didnt "feel" like i was watching the Cardinals this year. I felt like they resembled more like the Rangers i have seen, or some other AL squad. Just my two cents on the season.

It was fun at the end, with that thought that maybe we could pull it off, but i was satisfied that it was over too. Crazy. Never thought i would say that! I actually felt that way with the injury-warped 2006 team that completely deflated at the final month or so. Good thing they made it though!
