  • The Nationals at mid-season-and beyond...

Despite their currently anemic offense, with last night's (Friday, July 1st) 2-1 win over the Pirates, the Nationals are playing .500 baseball (41-41) at the season's mid-point.

While this may not be a great accomplishment by any standard, those of us who have rooted for, and suffered with this franchise since its relocation from Montreal actually see this as a sign of better things to come.

Here's a rundown of the past 6 seasons with the Nationals record at mid season and their final won/lost record:

Year Date Game 82 Final record

    2005 07/04 50-32 81-81

    2006 07/01 34-48 71-91

    2007 07/02 33-49 73-89

    2008 06/28 32-50 59-102

    2009 07/07 25-57 59-103

    2010 07/03 36-46 69-93

    2011 07/01 41-41 ??????

What does anyone else think-what are the chances for a better than .500 season in 2011?

If the middle of the lineup starts to hit, they have a good chance. That said, I'd be surprised if Marquis and/or Gorzelanny aren't traded, so it remains to be seen if the rotation will continue to perform as well in the second half. Detwiler is scheduled for a spot start on Tuesday, so he might end up as the replacement if a deal is made, since he's on the 40 man roster.

            The Nationals at 75 wins...

With a win Wednesday, Sep. 21st over the Phillies, the Nationals have reached the 75 win plateau for just the second time since the franchise relocated to Washington.

2005 saw the Nationals finish at .500 with an 81-81 mark.

(The newly relocated Nationals reached the 75 win mark on September 14th but then lost 10 of their last 16.)

The previous "second best" was a 73-89 mark in 2007.

              The Nationals reach 80 wins!

With a win in Florida on Wednesday, Sep. 28th the Nationals reach the 80 win mark. Unfortunately they finish just a tad under .500. Their final record is 80-81 with one rainout against the Dodgers not being made up.

The 80 wins is an 11 game improvement from 2010's final record of 69-93.
