The Nationals have bolstered (if you want to be generous with the term) their bullpen with three new additions. Perez, a 13-year veteran who was once a top prospect, a successful then a failed then a successful then a failed starter and is now an inconsistent LOOGY, had a 4.17 ERA in 70 appearances last year. Since his return to the majors as a reliever in 2012, he has a 3.31 ERA and 116 ERA+. Shawn Kelley pretty much stunk until last year, when he had a 2.45 mark in 53 games. Petit can relieve or start and is pretty middling at both of them. From 2006 to 2009, he had a 5.57 ERA. Then he was out of the big leagues. Then he returned in 2012 and has posted a 3.66 ERA and 97 ERA+ since.
Two more arms were added to the Washington Nationals bullpen on Friday. Left-handed veteran Oliver Perez and right-hander Shawn Kelley agreed to terms with the club, the team announced.

The Nationals made their deal with right-handed reliever Yusmeiro Petit official Monday afternoon, a move that filled their 40-man roster and added a fourth new reliever to their rebuilding bullpen. Petit, 31, signed a one-year deal with a club option for the 2017 season, and is guaranteed $3 million in the deal — $2.5 for 2016 and a $500,000 buyout of that option.
