    Conversations with Red Barber

For 12 years starting in 1981, Bob Edwards held a series of Friday morning talks on Morning Edition with sportscasting legend Red Barber. They discussed sports, of course, but also the weather, Barber's garden, history, war and social issues.

Here's a link where you can listen to those broadcasts.

    Red Barber Quotes and Phrases:

"Baseball is dull only to dull minds."

"Whenever you have a tight situation and there's a close pitch, the umpire gets a squawk no matter how he calls it."

"When I was in baseball and you went into the clubhouse, you didn't see ball players with curling irons."

"He's sitting in the catbird seat." (He has the lead.)

“It's so cold today even the brass monkeys have stayed home!”

"Hold the phone." (Manager on the way to the mound.)

"Running like a bunny with his tail on fire." (The player can run really fast.)

"The bases are F O B's" (Full of Brooklyn(s) Dodger players.)

According to the book Bums, O'Malley didn't like Barber's continued friendship with Branch Rickey, and was happy to replace his $60,000 salary with Vin Scully's (then) $18,000 salary.

Interesting that Craig played a pivotal role in both the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers first championship win.

    FEBRUARY 17th - A Birthday and A Rememberance!

On February 17th, some 98 years ago, RED BARBER was born. RED contributed greatly to OUR BROOKLYN DODGERS. If anyone has any special story about RED, please share it with US.

Today is also the 76th birthday of ROGER CRAIG, one of OUR winning pitchers in OUR 1955 World Series. Let's wish ROGER a most happy birthday, with many more to come.
